BUFFALO, N.Y. -
A goal early in the first half proved to be the difference maker as Canisius downed the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team 1-0 on Friday night at Demske Sports Complex.
Following a St. Bonaventure foul, Canisius forward Alan McGreal took a direct free kick from 25 yards in front of the Bona net. McGreal's shot ricocheted off a Bonnie defender and beat goalkeeper Ken Lish to give the Golden Griffins a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
Despite out-shooting Canisius 14-10, the Bonnies were unable to break through for the tying goal. Griffs keeper Matt Houghton made five saves, while Lish turned away two shots for St. Bonaventure.
Senior forward Kevin Omokhua led the Bonnies with seven shots, while freshman Samuel Maheu added two.
The loss drops the Bonnies to 0-8, while Canisius improved to 2-3-1.
St. Bonaventure will look for its first win of the season as it opens Atlantic 10 Conference play against Fordham on Sept. 30. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at McGraw-Jennings Field.
