Bonnies drop 1-0 decision to nationally ranked Saint Louis

Oct. 12, 2007

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week Kyle Patterson's fifth goal of the season was all No. 18 Saint Louis needed to defeat the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team 1-0 Friday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.

The Brown and White's loss snaps the club's two-game win streak and drops the Bonnies record to 3-4-1, while the Billikens extend their unbeaten streak to six for an overall mark of 5-1-3.

"We have to give credit to Saint Louis because they found a way to win," said head coach Mel Mahler. "I was very encouraged with our scoring opportunities, but we have to take advantage of those chances, especially against a team like Saint Louis."

Patterson notched his team-leading fifth tally of the season at the 52:28 mark after a scoreless first stanza. The English international carried the ball past multiple Bonnies defenders before firing the ball past freshman goalkeeper David Flynn into the right corner of the net from 20 yards out to seal the victory.

The Brown and White created multiple scoring chances later in the half in attempt to tie the game. Sophomore Tyler Bellamy's header sailed just over the crossbar in the 78th minute off of a cross from senior Tom Burkett.

In the 87th minute, the Bonnies fired two shots towards the Billikens' net forcing a save from sophomore goalkeeper Ross Kaufman from the foot of Stephen Bortolon, while a shot from sophomore Samuel Maheu missed wide right.

For the first time in two contests, the Brown and White were outshot by their opponent as Saint Louis owned a 14-7 shot advantage over the Bonnies. Bortolon, Maheu and senior Jon Lopez fired two shots each for the Bonnies.

In his eighth career match in net, Flynn turned away six shots with four saves in the final 45 minutes.

"We need to get ourselves regrouped and ready for Charlotte on Sunday," said Mahler. "Our club is really playing well and our guys are starting to believe in what we're doing."

The Bonnies return to action on Sunday afternoon when the Charlotte 49ers visit McGraw-Jennings Field for a noon kick-off.
