Vasilev launches Bonnies past Duquesne, 1-0

Oct. 20, 2007

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Senior Nikola Vasilev's second goal in as many contests was all the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team needed in the club's 1-0 victory at Duquesne Saturday night.

The Bonnies' fourth win in their last five matches improves the team's record to 5-4-1, 2-1, while the Dukes dropped their third straight to fall to 3-7-3, 1-2.

"I am extremely happy for our players following tonight's result," said head coach Mel Mahler. "Duquesne has had a lot of success at home and we are ecstatic to get three points out of this."

Following a scoreless first half, the Brown and White picked up the contest's only score at the 54:27 mark when Vasilev received a serve from the right side and blasted the ball to the far post for his third game-winner of the season. The senior forward picked up his team-leading fifth goal of the season off sophomore Samuel Maheu's second assist of 2007.

Freshman goalkeeper David Flynn turned away three shots in net for his first collegiate shutout and fifth victory of his career. The Lancaster, Pa. native picked up all of his saves in the second stanza.

Despite being outshot 13-8 by Duquesne, the Bonnies were able finish the game's only goal. Senior Nick Lopez, Maheu and Vasilev each tallied two shots each for the Brown and White.

Over the course of the contest, the head official handed out seven yellow cards, as well as three reds in a five-minute span in the second half. Senior John Darrah was sent off at 77:51 mark with Duquesne's Kevin Foglesong after a small scuffle erupted on the field.

"As can be seen with all of this year's results, there is a lot of parity in the conference," said Mahler. "If we prepare properly, we can put ourselves in great position to be successful in the league."

The Bonnies return to action on Friday, Oct. 26 when the club travels to Fordham for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off.
