Brown and White finish season with loss at Xavier

Nov. 11, 2007

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Following two separate delays due to lightning, the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team concluded its 2007 season with a 1-0 loss to Xavier on Sunday afternoon at the XU Soccer Complex.

The loss snapped the Bonnies three-game unbeaten streak to drop their overall record to 6-7-3 and an identical 3-4-2 Atlantic 10 mark of a season ago, while the Musketeers improved to 8-10-1 (4-4-1).

"I am proud of the opportunity I had to work with our eight seniors for the last three seasons," said head coach Mel Mahler. "This team deserves to be in the postseason, but it's unfortunate that our conference setup only allows six of the 14 teams into the tournament."

Freshman James Getzen tallied the game's only score at the 21:50 mark to send his side to victory. Getzen received a pair of passes from senior Chris Miliano and sophomore Slav Ubiparopovic before bending a shot into the left side of the net past freshman goalkeeper David Flynn.

Xavier held an 18-16 advantage in total shots during a steady rain throughout the match. In their final contests in the Brown and White, seniors Jon Lopez and Nikola Vasilev paced the Bonnies up front with three shots apiece.

Following a pair of shutouts in his previous three matches, Flynn made a career-high nine saves in his final game in net of his rookie season.

Mahler directed his club to their highest win total since 2004 and doubled the three-win season of a year ago. The Brown and White return the majority of their lineup for the 2008 campaign, but will lose eight seniors to graduation.
