Playing in front of the RC faithful for the last time, senior Audrey Latendresse finished with a career-high 31 points on senior day, but it wasn't enough, as the St. Bonaventure dropped an 86-74 decision to Charlotte Sunday afternoon at the Reilly Center.
Despite the loss, the Bonnies (15-14, 5-9) held on to 10th place in the Atlantic 10 thanks to Saint Louis' loss at La Salle. St. Bonaventure will take on the No. 7 seed Massachusetts in the first round of the tournament. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. on Friday, March 2 on the campus of Xavier University.
Latendresse finished 10-for-11 from the field, including 5-for-6 from long range. She scored 18 of her game-high 31 points can in the second half and also collected six rebounds.
Charlotte came out firing, taking a 14-7 lead only 2:57 into the game. The 49ers extended their lead to eight, 25-17, with 9:07 left in the first.
The Bonnies responded with a 7-0 run, sparked by a three-pointer from sophomore Katelyn Murray and four points from junior Priscilla Edwards, to come to within one at 25-24.
Charlotte came right back with an 8-0 run of their own to take their largest lead of the half (9) at 33-24 with 5:15 left on the clock.
Latendresse put a quick stop to the 49er run and ignited an 11-2 scoring spurt for the Brown and White. Three consecutive three-pointers by Latendresse and a transition jump shot by freshman Julie Molloy tied the game at 35-35 with 2:40 left in the half.
Charlotte closed the half by scoring six of the final nine points to take a 41-38 lead into the locker room. Latendresse finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the field in the first half, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc, for 13 points.
Latendresse continued to have the hot hand to start the second half, tying the game at 41-41 with another three-pointer, and beginning a 7-2 run by the Bonnies. A layup by freshman Dana Mitchell gave St. Bonaventure their first lead of the game at 45-43 with 18:04 remaining.
The next 8:04, the game featured five ties and four lead changes as the two teams traded baskets back and forth. Over that stretch, St. Bonaventure shot 6-of-9 from the field (15 points) while Charlotte shot 7-for-10 (16 points). A trifecta from Molloy gave the Bonnies their last lead, 60-59, with 12:14 left in the second half.
The 49ers pulled away thanks to a 13-0 run midway through the second half, giving them their largest lead of the game at 72-60 with 7:20.
St. Bonaventure was able to climb within six, 76-70, but Charlotte scored the games next six points to solidify the win and a first round bye in next week's conference tournament.
Charlotte pounded the ball inside the entire game, outscoring the Bonnies 58-28 in the paint. Their efficiency inside led to a 56 percent (37-66) shooting clip from the field and a 40-29 rebounding edge.
Mitchell finished with 16 points for St. Bonaventure, while Priscilla Edwards ended with 11. Sophomore Ashley Edwards led the Bonnies with 10 rebounds, all on the defensive end.
Wendy Stywalt led four double-figure scores for Charlotte with 21 points, followed by Sabrina Gregory's 20.
