Two pitchers combined to hold St. Bonaventure to five hits as West Virginia took a 12-1 win over the Bonnies on Tuesday afternoon at Hawley Field.
West Virginia, which had 15 hits on the day, held St. Bonaventure off the scoreboard for the final seven innings. It was a 2-1 game through four innings, but the Mountaineers struck for two runs in both the fifth and sixth and four more in the seventh.
The Bonnies scored their only run in the second inning when junior right fielder T.J. Pennino singled home sophomore second baseman Kevin Suminski, who had walked and stolen second base.
Junior Michael Proctor suffered the loss and fell to 1-3 on the season. He allowed six runs on nine hits through 5-1/3 innings.
Kenny Durst and Chris Enurato combined for the win for the Mountaineers. Durst (3-1) earned the win, allowing only three hits with seven strikeouts over 5-2/3 innings.
St. Bonaventure is now 4-9 on the year while West Virginia is 10-4.
The Bonnies and Mountaineers will meet again on Wednesday at Hawley Field. The first pitch is slated for 3:00.
