ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -
Strong pitching led Fordham to a doubleheader sweep over St. Bonaventure on Saturday at Fred Handler Park. The Rams pulled away late to take a 12-1 victory in game one, then stifled the Bonnies' bats in a 2-0 win in the nightcap.
Senior Brian Pellegrini became St. Bonaventure's all-time hits leader with a double in the fourth inning of game two, breaking Eric Wilson's record of 217 hits. Pellegrini finished with four hits on the day, bringing his career total to 220.
In game two, Fordham broke through in the fifth with a sacrifice fly by Rich Goulian to take a 1-0 lead. The Rams tacked on an insurance run in the eighth, as Bobby DiNardo hit an RBI triple just past the glove of a diving center fielder Randy Moley to make it 2-0.
That was all Fordham right-hander Tom Davis would need, as he allowed only four hits in his 8-1/3 innings of work for the win. Peter Kennelly came on for the last two outs to record the save.
Bona junior Cody Vincent suffered the tough luck loss, despite throwing a complete game. Vincent allowed seven hits and struck out four.
The first game remained close through the first seven frames. Fordham opened the scoring in the second inning with an unearned run. DiNardo singled and advanced to second on an error, and moved to third on a single by John Kahn. After a strikeout, Mike Mobbs grounded into a fielder's choice that scored DiNardo, as the Bonnies could not complete the double play.
The Bonnies answered back in the bottom half with a two-out double by designated hitter Matt Mardeusz, scoring junior Josh Sova to tie the game at 1-1.
DiNardo then broke the tie in the sixth with an RBI single to put the Rams up 2-1.
The Rams broke the game open in the eighth without managing an extra-base hit. Fordham scored nine runs against four Bonnies' pitchers with the help of five singles, five walks, two hit batters, and a throwing error.
Junior Michael Proctor suffered the loss despite a strong effort. The left-hander struck out ten and allowed only three earned runs on six hits before tiring in the eighth. The Rams' Javier Martinez was sensational in the win, allowing only five hits over eight innings.
The threat of rain on Sunday forced the series to be concluded Saturday.
The Bonnies are now 7-13 overall and 2-4 in Atlantic 10 play. Fordham moves to 13-9 overall and 5-1 in conference action.
St. Bonaventure returns to action on Tuesday, April 3, with a doubleheader against Niagara at Fred Handler Park. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
