April 29, 2007

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Few people knew much about Kevin Suminski before this baseball season. That has changed.

St. Bonaventure's sophomore infielder continued his breakout season by cracking two home runs and driving in five runs to lead the Bonnies to a 10-3 win over LaSalle on Sunday at DeVincent Field.

The win completed an important three-game sweep by the Bonnies (18-19) which improved their Atlantic 10 Conference record to 9-8. St. Bonaventure moved up to sixth place in the A-10 standings.

St. Bonaventure led 5-3 going in the seventh inning when Suminski hit his first homer, a two-run shot, to give the Bonnies some breathing room. In the following inning, Suminski came to the plate with two runners on base and two outs and hit his second home run, this against LaSalle relief ace Gerard Breslin. The three-run shot put the Bonnies ahead 10-3. Suminski, who is the Bonnies' second-leading hitter from his leadoff spot in the order, now has three home runs.

The Bonnies also rode the pitching of junior Michael Proctor, who allowed only three runs over 6-2/3 innings. Proctor earned the win to even his record at 5-5. Relievers Cory Sudbrook and Dennis Sherba held the Explorers off the board over the final 2-1/3 innings.

A good start also aided the Bonnies' cause. Senior second baseman Kieran Malone gave the Bonnies a 2-0 lead in the first inning when he singled with the bases loaded. Sophomore catcher B.J. Salerno had an RBI single in the fourth.

St. Bonaventure had 11 hits on the day led by senior third baseman Josh Perkins, who went 3-4. Suminski and Malone each recorded two hits.

For the second straight day, the Bonnies played without senior All-America candidate Brian Pellegrini, who is suffering from a hamstring strain.

LaSalle fell to 6-12 in conference play and 14-24 overall.

St. Bonaventure will return to action this Wednesday, May 2, when it travels to LeMoyne for a doubleheader.
