Bonnies split double-header with Niagara

April 3, 2007

Final Stats

ST. BONAVENTURE, NY - St. Bonaventure split its double-header with Little Three rival Niagara on Tuesday afternoon, falling 6-4 in game one before cruising to an 11-2 win in the second game at Fred Handler Park.

Both games were seven innings due to the fact that it was a mid-week, non-conference double-header.

St. Bonaventure held a 4-1 lead in game one, but Niagara scored two runs in the third and one in the fourth to even the score at 4-4.

With the bases loaded and one out in the seventh and final inning, Niagara first baseman Timothy Cozier hit a sharp ground ball to Bona shortstop Josh Perkins. Perkins fielded the ball cleanly, but fumbled the throw to second base allowing the runner to score from third. Niagara would add another run in seventh and shut down the Bonnies in the bottom half of the inning to complete the 6-4 victory.

It was a different story in game two, as St. Bonaventure crossed the plate seven times in the second inning to take an early 8-0 lead. The Bonnies tacked on runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings, and held the Purple Eagles to two runs on eight hits en route to an 11-2 decision.

Senior pitcher Ryan Kerr earned the win in game two, striking out three batters in six innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the season. Left-hander Michael Proctor was charged the loss in game one, allowing two runs (both unearned) and one hit while working the seventh inning. Proctor is now 2-5.

Brian Pellegrini finished the day a combined 2-4 with a three-run homerun and four RBI, while sophomore second baseman Kevin Suminski - who played shortstop in game two - went 5-6 with two RBI and three runs scored on the afternoon.

Senior infielder Kieran Malone and sophomore catcher Brandon Salerno enjoyed strong second games. Malone went 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Salerno finished 1-2 with two RBI.

The Bonnies are back in action this weekend with a three-game road trip against Atlantic 10 Conference foe George Washington. The first game is set for Friday at 4 p.m.
