ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team surrendered a goal in the final minute of overtime in a 2-1 loss to the University of Buffalo earlier this evening at McGraw-Jennings Field.
The defeat drops the Bonnies to 1-3-1, while the Bulls extended its win streak to four games, moving them to 4-2 for the season.
At the 99:06 mark, junior Dan Gwyther redirected the ball past freshman goalkeeper David Flynn from three yards out off of a free kick by senior Dave Chojnowski for the game-winning goal.
"Today was an example of the other team making one more play than us," said head coach Mel Mahler. "We played well enough to win, but we need to execute better to get the result."
The Bulls opened up the scoring in the 20th minute of play after sophomore Steffen Thoresen's header from inside the six found the back of the net. Fellow classmate Alex Marrello set up the goal when his fifth corner kick of the first half connected with Thoresen for the score.
Senior Nikola Vasilev created the Bonnies best scoring chance of the half, firing a shot that forced a save from sophomore goalkeeper Robert Shuttleworth at the 36:30 mark.
Under a minute later, the Brown and White beat the reigning MAAC Player of the Week for the first time in three games on a goal from sophomore Samuel Maheu. The Ottawa-native gained control of a rebound off his own shot and fired it into the corner of the net at the 37:56 mark to knot the score at 1-1.
After a scoreless second half, the Bulls used a 2-0 shot advantage in overtime to pick up the victory.
The Brown and White continued its improvement on the offensive attack. For the second straight match, the Bonnies fired 11 overall shots, connecting three on net against the Bulls. Buffalo owned a two shot advantage over the home side, but were able to place nine at the goal.
Flynn made his fifth consecutive start in goal for the Bonnies and tied a career-high with seven saves.
"I was pleased to see we fought back after an early goal," said Mahler. "But these kinds of games show us what we need to work on to get better and earn more favorable results."
The Brown and White will return to action on Sept. 23 with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Canisius at McGraw-Jennings Field.
