Strong pitching leads Bonnies to 6-2 win over Mount St. Mary's

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Senior Michael Proctor and freshman Cael Johnson combined for 14 strikeouts and the Mount St. Mary's lineup scoreless for seven consecutive innings as St. Bonaventure cruised to a 6-2 win in its first game in the sunshine state on Tuesday night.

Proctor earned the win on the mound in his first start of the season, striking out nine batters while walking just one in five innings of work. Johnson came on in the sixth and went the rest of the way in his second collegiate appearance. Johnson struck out five and also walked just one batter.

The Bona bats six runs of support came on seven hits and just one extra base hit. The three, four and five spot hitters combined to go 6-for10 and were directly involved in every run. Junior Kevin Suminski went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI from the three spot. Batting cleanup, senior Randy Moley also went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and five-hole hitter Anthony Randich drove-in a run with a single.

Playing in their season opener, the Mount managed one run in the first and one in the ninth. The win moves the Brown and White 2-1 on the young season. The Bonnies will play six games over the next week in West Palm Beach, starting with Mercyhurst on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Trailing 1-0, St. Bonaventure tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Suminski came around to score on Randich's single into right field. Suminski reached base on a single with two outs and moved into scoring position by stealing second base.

Again, it was the Brown and White making noise with two outs in the fifth as they plated four runs to break the game at 5-1. Mount St. Mary's starting pitcher Andrew Germuth loaded the bases with two outs by giving up a single to catcher Brandon Salerno and issuing a pair of walks to freshman Brad Steinbach and senior T.J. Pennino. Germuth stayed on the hill and promptly gave up a two-run single to Suminski scoring Salerno and Steinbach to make it 3-1.

Sophomore Max Brittenham took the mound for Germuth with two runners in scoring position and still two outs and on the first pitch hung a curve ball to Moley, who ripped a single into centerfield easily scoring Pennino and a fleet-footed Suminski from second.

The Bonnies added one more run in the seventh as Suminski started things again with two outs by earning a walk. Moley reached first on an infield single and the third baseman's throw sailed down the right field allowing Suminski to score all the way from first.
