Bulls blank Bonnies in 1-0 triumph

Sept. 26, 2008

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Buffalo fullback Dan Gwyther's goal in the closing stages of the first half proved to be the difference as the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 result to the Bulls on Friday evening at UB Stadium.

The Bonnies saw their three-game unbeaten streak snapped this evening following three straight draws. Their first loss in 21 days slips the club's overall mark to 1-2-3. Buffalo picked up its fourth win in the last five matches to improve to 8-2-1 on the season.

UB tallied the contest's only score with just over 12 minutes before the interval. Gwyther beat Flynn at the 12:18 mark to give his side a 1-0 edge as the English international tallied his third goal of the season. Fellow senior Marc Stencel set up the score.

Momentum continued to turn in UB's direction as junior Matt Culo earned his second red card of the year. Culo was sent off by the head referee, forcing the Bonnies to take the field a player down for the remainder of the match.

In the aftermath of the booking, the Bulls outshot the Bonnies 7-3 in the first half. The Brown and White picked up the pace of play following the interval, firing six of their nine shots in the second.

However, they failed to find the back of the net for the second straight contest and third time this season. Junior forward Samuel Maheu and sophomore midfielder Fabrizio Savarino tallied three shots apiece for the second match in a row.

Sophomore keeper David Flynn did his best to keep the Bonnies hopes alive with five saves on the day. The Bonnies forced UB netminder Robert Shuttleworth to make a pair of stops in the victory.

The Bonnies return to the pitch on Sunday, September 28 for the conclusion of Big 4 action with a match-up against Niagara. Kick-off at McGraw-Jennings Field is slated for 2:30 p.m.
