ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St.
Bonaventure men's soccer team scored quickly into the first
half and never looked back, defeating Saint Joseph's 2-0 at
Finnesey Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Bonnies are now 7-6 on the season including a 3-2 record in
the Atlantic 10 conference. Saint Joseph's falls to 0-12 with
an overall record. St. Bonaventure has not had a winning record
after five conference games since 1999 when the Bonnies opened
conference play 4-1.
“After a tough loss Friday it's great to get back in
the win column. We played with a purpose in the first half and the
result was a 2-0 lead at the half,” said head coach Mel
Mahler. “I give credit to Saint Joseph's for making
things more difficult for us in the second half. We didn't
posses the ball as well, resulting in fewer scoring
opportunities.”
St. Bonaventure kicked off its scoring just 12 minutes into the
first half when senior Sam Maheu hit a left-side pass to junior
Brett Allen who one-touched it past Saint Joseph's keeper.
Allen's goal is the fourth goal on the season, putting him
second on the team in points with 13.
The Bonnies went up 2-0 in the first half on a goal from junior
Kevin Okapal. Senior Phil Corbi crossed the ball to Okapal who
chipped it past the keeper for his first goal of the season.
St. Bonaventure edged the Hawks in shots 18-8, while getting
five corner kicks. Junior keeper David Flynn picked up one save in
the shutout.
“Overall the shutout is a great result and now it's
time to direct our focus on Rhode Island and UMass for this coming
weekend.”
The Bonnies continue conference play on the road against Rhode
Island and Massachusetts next weekend. On Friday, St. Bonaventure
visits the Rams for a 7:30 p.m. kick off. The Bonnies' match
up against the Minutemen starts at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
