AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Fabrizio
Savarino scored his second game-winning goal of the weekend to
push the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team past Massachusetts
picking up a 1-0 Atlantic 10 victory on Sunday afternoon at Rudd
Field.
The win against UMass marks the first time the Bonnies defeated
the Minutemen since 1999 when St. Bonaventure won with the same
score of today's game. St. Bonaventure is now 9-6, 5-2 in the
Atlantic 10. The five conference wins are the most for the Bonnies
since 1999 when the team went 8-4.
“It was a great weekend for the players in our program.
Today's win against a very hard working, well coached UMass
team breaks a 10-year drought and puts us in postseason
position,” said head coach Mel Mahler.
“We've been striving for this when we brought the
seniors in four years ago. The players are enjoying the results of
their hardwork.”
Savarino headed home the game winning goal at the 31:31 mark of
the match. Senior Sam Maheu carried the
ball up the right flank before slipping a pass to senior Joe Miller who sent a
cross into the 18-yard box. The goal is Savarino's
sixth of the season and third game-winning goal to give him a total
of 13 points on the season.
With Maheu's assist, the senior now moves into seventh on
the all-time scoring list with 56 points off 21 goals and 14
assists in his four years.
St. Bonaventure edged the Minutemen offensively leading in shots
14-9 and corner kicks 7-6. Junior keeper David Flynn picked up
one save and his fifth shutout of the season, matching last
year's performance.
Now one win shy of registering double-digit victories for the
first time since 1999, St. Bonaventure will travel to Duquesne on
Friday. Kick-off is set for 5 p.m. The Bonnies then return home for
the make-up game against Dayton on Sunday for senior day at
McGraw-Jennings Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
“We still have two matches remaining and nothing is set
for the postseason so our focus is to get ready for Duquesne and
Dayton this coming weekend.”
