ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - A 35-6 run that stretched from the
end of the first half through the opening 12 minutes of the second
half helped the St. Bonaventure men's basketball team shake
off a slow start en route to a 66-40 win over Binghamton on Friday
night at the Reilly Center.
The 40 points giving up is the best defensive effort since Jan. 7,
1995, when the Brown and White held Appalachian State to 32 points
at the Reilly Center. It also marks the first time the Bonnies have
held a team under 50 points since an 84-44 win over Rhode Island in
2000.
The Bearcats managed just six points over 15 minutes and 41
seconds that crossed over from first to second half. The Bonnies
forced 19 Binghamton turnovers that led to 22 points.
The win moves the Bonnies to 2-1 on the season, heading into next
week's three-game stint at the BTI Classic hosted by Illinois
State. The Bearcats, on the other hand, fall to 1-2 with the
loss.
Just two players finished in double figures for the Brown and
White, as 11 of the 12 players who got into the game registered a
bucket. Senior Jonathan Hall led the way with 12 points, while
sophomore Michael Davenport finished with 10 points that to a pair
of three-pointers.
St. Bonaventure built a commanding 43-24 on the glass thanks to a
season-best 16 rebounds on the offensive glass. The Brown and
White's hard work on the glass led to a 16-5 edge in second
chance points and 34 points in the paint.
Sophomore Andrew Nicholson fell just one point shy of a
double-double with nine points, a game-high 11 rebounds and four
blocks. Redshirt freshman Marquise Simmons gathered eight rebounds
in just 11 minutes of work.
The opening 16 minutes were far from impressive for both teams as
St. Bonaventure opened a 21-17 lead with just 4:23 remaining in the
first half.
Hall finally got the Brown and White going on the offensive end
over the final four minutes, sparking an 11-0 run to close the half
to give the Bonnies a 32-17 lead at the break. Hall accounted for
eight points during the run, including the final six. The other
three came off a three-pointer from the right elbow by fellow
senior Chris Matthews.
After shooting 50 percent or better in each of the first halves in
its first two games, St. Bonaventure struggled its way to a 42
percent (13-31) clip over the opening 20 minutes. Binghamton shot
just 38 percent, but was hampered more by 13 turnovers, including
four in its final six possessions, that led to 15 Bona points.
The Bonnies continued to build on their 11-0 run to close the half
by adding 24 of the first 30 points of the second stanza. All five
of Binghamton's turnovers in the second half came over the
opening 11:18 in which the Bonnies built up their largest lead of
the game (33), at 56-23.
For the game, the Bonnies finished under 50 percent from the field
for the first time this season, going 25-of-58 for a 43 percent
clip. Binghamton managed just 17 made field goals and passed out
only four assists.
All nine of Matthews' points came via the long range field
goal, as he went 3-for-8 from three.
St. Bonaventure will now enjoy a full week off from game action
before it takes part in the BTI Classic hosted by Illinois State.
The Bonnies will play three games over the three-day tournament
beginning with Southeast Missouri State on Friday, Nov. 27 at 9:00
P.M. EST.
