BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After going on a 12-6
run to end regulation, the St. Bonaventure women's basketball
team fell in overtime in the championship game of the Christmas
City Classic against host Lehigh, 68-66 Wednesday afternoon at
Stabler Arena.
The Brown and White drop their second game of the season, moving
their record to 12-2 with one non-conference game remaining before
the start of Atlantic 10 play. Lehigh improves to 11-2 on the
season.
Down by one with 1:26 to play, senior Dana
Mitchell tossed in a lay up to give the Bonnies a 59-58
advantage. After a turnover and foul by Lehigh, freshman
Chelsea Bowker converted a free-throw to push the
Bonnies' lead to two with 20 seconds left to go.
The host team was not held down for long as a foul on Bowker
took Erica Prosser to the line who hit two free throws to tie the
game, 60-60 and send the contest into overtime.
The Mountain Hawks were not fazed by the Bonnies' late run
in regulation as they rattled off the first five points, but the
Bonnies answered back with five consecutive points matching Lehigh
65-65 with 1:45 seconds left to play.
A jumper by Kristen Dalton with 38 seconds later gave Lehigh the
final push it needed to go ahead for the last time. Freshman Alaina
Walker attempted a last-second jumper, but it caromed off the rim
as time expired.
Mitchell led the Bonnies for the second consecutive game with 28
points on 10-for-20 shooting from the field and 7-of-12 from the
line. Mitchell was one rebound short of her second double-double of
the season after pulling down nine rebounds.
Lehigh was led by tournament MVP Prosser, who scored a team-high
20 while Emily Gratch and Courtney Dentler added 12 and 11,
respectively.
The game consisted of a combined 79 free throws with Lehigh
shooting 73 percent (33-45) from the line. St. Bonaventure shot a
season-low 62 percent (21-34).
St. Bonaventure opened the game on a 12-5 run capped by a
three-pointer by Horton, but Lehigh scored eight unanswered points
to lead 13-12 at the 16-minute mark.
The Bonnies battled foul trouble allowing the Mountain Hawks two
three-point plays and nine points from the line to move ahead 21-17
with 8:43 left in the half.
Lehigh held a slight edge as the teams traded baskets over the
final eight minutes and took a 31-25 lead into the locker room. The
Bonnies trailed at the half for just the second time this
season.
Both teams came out of the locker room fired up as the teams
notched 12 fouls in the opening nine minutes of the second leaving
the Mountain Hawks ahead 44-32, continuing their largest lead of
the game, at the 11:02 mark.
The teams matched basket-for-basket for the next seven minutes,
but four consecutive scoring possessions, including two consecutive
baskets by Mitchell gave the Bonnies a one-point lead at 57-56 with
just 2:26 to play.
Sophomore Megan Van Tatenhove was the only
other Bonnie to score in double-digits, pitching in 10 with no
turnovers and three caroms. Bowker hit two from the long range and
3-of-4 from the line to chip in nine points. Sophomore
Jessica Jenkins could not find the bottom of the
net as she shot 0-for-10, but dished out a career-high five assists
out of the 14 total for the Bonnies.
The Bonnies will ring in the new year against ACC foe Virginia
on Monday, January 4. Tip-off against the Cavaliers is set for 7
p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
