XENIA, Ohio -
After two late-inning losses on Friday and Saturday, the St. Bonaventure baseball team appeared to be out of gas on Sunday afternoon as it dropped the third and final game of the series to Dayton, 9-2, at Athletes in Action Field.
All three games of the Atlantic 10 opening series were played at three different parks due to Dayton hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
Freshman righty Chuck Ghysels had the Bonnies number for much of the afternoon, fanning nine batters over seven innings of work en route to the win. Ghysels gave up two runs on just three hits, as the Flyers improved to 11-9 overall and 3-0 A-10.
The Brown and White also started a freshman on the mound, as Sebastian Bellitto took the hill for the third time this season. Bellitto allowed just one run over the first five innings, but was roughed up for four runs in the sixth to earn his first career loss (2-1).
St. Bonaventure scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning thanks to a two-out rally created by senior Kevin Suminski. The Mentor, Ohio product delivered a two-out single and then stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw. Fellow senior Anthony Randich picked up his sixth hit of the weekend on the next pitch, singling up the middle to bring home Suminski.
Unfortunately, for the Bonnies, that was their last run until the eighth inning, as Dayton reeled off seven unanswered runs. The Flyers led 7-1 after seven full innings.
Randich singled home the Brown and White's other run in the eighth to make it 7-2.
After producing double-digit hits in the opening two games, St. Bonaventure managed just five on the afternoon. Randich led the way, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. He finished the weekend seven hits.
St. Bonaventure will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Big 4 rival Canisius at Fred Handler Park. The nine-inning affair will start at 3 p.m. and will be broadcast live by WSBU 88.3 FM.
