Box Score
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -
Duquesne junior Sarah Cates scored the game-tying goal with three seconds left in regulation, and the game-winning goal in the third overtime, to give the Dukes a 16-15 Atlantic 10 win over St. Bonaventure on Friday afternoon at McGraw Jennings Field.
Cates tied the game up, at 14-14, when she tallied an unassisted goal with just three seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. After the two teams traded goals in the first two overtimes Cates converted a free-position shot with 1:17 left in the third overtime frame to give Duquesne the win.
The loss drops the Brown and White's record to 7-8 on the season and 1-4 in A-10 play. The loss also eliminated St. Bonaventure from participating in the Atlantic 10 Tournament next Friday, April 24, as it will not finish in the top four in the league standings.
Duquesne, win the win, moves its record back up to 7-8 overall and 2-3 in conference.
Leading the way for the St. Bonaventure on the offensive end was junior Molly Hastrich. Hastrich, the reigning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, scored six goals in the contest, on the strength of a perfect 3-for-3 performance in free-position shots.
Getting the start in net for the Bonnies was junior Tori Waheibi. Waheibi played 44:56 in the game and allowed 10 goals to take the loss.
The only statistic that Duquesne dominated, in a very tightly contested game, was draw controls. The Dukes gained possession of 21 draws, while St. Bonaventure only corralled 14.
The contest featured a battle between two very evenly matched teams. No team held more than a two goals advantage the entire game. Duquesne went up 5-3 when junior Meghan Frederick scored an unassisted goal. St. Bonaventure would answer right back with two straight free-position shot goals by Hastrich and freshman Danielle Drabin to tie the game up at 5-5 with 11:14 to go in the first half.
The rest of the contest would be a back and forth affair, featuring five ties. Junior Janna Faulkner tied the game up at 13-13, on a free-position shot, with just 5:07 left in the game. Hastrich would give the Brown and White the lead when she buried her fifth goal of the game, to make the score 14-13 Bonnies with just 3:37 remaining in regulation.
Cates would send the game into overtime for Duquesne, on an unassisted goal, with just three seconds remaining in the contest.
The Dukes would strike first, in the first overtime, when freshman Katie Rekart scored a goal to make the score 15-14. Hastrich would tie the game up at 15-15 with her sixth and final goal of the afternoon to send the game into a third overtime. Duquesne would end the game, however, when Cates converted a free-position shot with just 1:17 left in the third overtime to clinch the win.
Rekart led Duquesne offensively, scoring a team-high five goals in the contest.
Junior Caitlin Carducci played the entire game between the pipes for the Dukes, allowing 15 goals while making nine saves to earn the win.
The Brown and White will look to get back in the win column as they travel to Philadelphia to take on Temple on Friday, April 17. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
