The St. Bonaventure baseball team dropped the third and final game of its series at Rhode Island on Sunday, falling 12-5 to the Rams at Bill Beck Field.
URI took all three games over the weekend, outscoring the Bonnies 25-7 en route to lengthening their hold on first place in the Atlantic 10. The Rams now sit at 24-12-1 overall and 12-2 in the conference.
St. Bonaventure, on the other hand, now stands at 16-15 on the season and 5-9 in A-10 action. The Brown and White still have four A-10 series' left in the regular season, including three at Fred Handler Park. Before the Bonnies welcome Richmond to campus next weekend they will host Big 4 rival Canisius on Tuesday, April 21 at 3 p.m.
The highlight of the day for the Bonnies was a pair of home runs from senior Anthony Randich and junior Kyle Gorby. Randich's third long ball of the season came in the form of a two-run shot in the fourth inning, while Gorby's solo blast in the seventh inning was also his third of the season. Randich accounted for half of the team's six hits, going 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Senior Jim Britton's attempt for win number six on the season was rudely interrupted by a six-run first inning by Rhode Island. Five of the first six batters reached base for the Rams and a three-run home run
The Bonnies broke into the scoring column in the fourth, as a Randich's eighth career home run brought the visitors to within 6-2. Sophomore Jesse Bosnik scored the other run after earning a walk.
Rhode Island regained control of the momentum with a run in its half of the fourth and two more in the fifth to up its lead to 9-2.
A two-run sixth inning and Gorby's home run in the seventh helped St. Bonaventure climb back into within four, at 9-5. Randich ripped a RBI double in the sixth, while sophomore Brad Steinbach drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly.
The Rams accounted for the final three runs of the game off a trio of Bonaventure pitcher.
Britton took the loss on the mound after giving up nine runs, just five earned, over five innings. Sophomore Aron Meindl (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) was the only Bona pitcher to not give up a run, while the final three runs were all unearned.
