ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -
After a relatively even first half of play, the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team failed to keep pace in the second stanza as it fell to Saint Joseph's 12-5 in Atlantic 10 action on Friday afternoon at McGraw Jennings Field.
The Hawks out-scored the Bonnies 7-1 in the second half, which was marred by very poor field conditions due to severe rain showers throughout the game.
The loss drops the Brown and White's record to 4-7 on the season and 0-3 in A-10 play. Saint Joseph's evens its record at 6-6 overall and improves to 2-1 in league play.
Leading the way for the St. Bonaventure on the offensive end was sophomore Christine Hanley with three goals. The other two Brown and White goals were scored by senior Keri Vito and freshman Elizabeth Demara. St. Bonaventure's five goals in the game was its lowest goal output of the season.
Getting her first start of the season in net for the Brown and White was freshman Victoria Morgan. Morgan logged 49:50 minutes of time between the pipes, allowing 11 goals while making five saves in the loss before being replaced by junior Tori Waheibi.
The only two areas that the Hawks held a distinct advantage over the Bonnies were shots and turnovers. Saint Joseph's out-shot St. Bonaventure 34-23, while committing just 13 turnovers compared to the Brown and White's 17 miscues.
St. Bonaventure actually started the game as the more aggressive team dominating the field of play early on. Two goals by Hanley, including the home teams' only free position conversion of the afternoon, would give the Bonnies a 2-0 lead with 21:57 remaining in the first half.
Saint Joseph's would come right back with two-straight goals of its own, on free position tallies by freshman Meghan McDevitt and Jen Peters, to tie the game up at 2-2 with 16:12 to go in the first.
The rest of the first half would be a back-and-forth affair that saw Saint Joseph's take a 5-4 lead going into intermission.
The second half was a different story, as Saint Joseph's came out of intermission to score the first seven goals of the stanza. The run would culminate when junior Jenna Martino connected on a free position shot to make the score 12-4 with just 6:24 left in the second half.
Hanley would end an over 33 minute long scoreless streak for the Brown and White when she buried her third goal of the afternoon to make the final tally 12-5.
Senior Suzy Herlihy had a solid game in net for the Hawks making 15 saves while allowing just five goals to pick up the win.
Four Saint Joseph's players scored multiple goals on the afternoon led by Peters and McDevitt who scored three goals apiece in the win.
The Brown and White will look to get back in the win column as it welcomes A-10 foe La Salle to McGraw Jennings Field on Sunday, March 5. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and can be followed through Game Tracker on www.GOBONNIES.com.
