After St. Bonaventure stormed back from behind to tie the match,
2-2, the Saint's Sindre Ek's goal in the final 24 seconds proved to
be the game-winner in the heartbreaking 3-2 loss on a rainy Friday
night at Siena.
To make the loss worse St. Bonaventure's go-ahead goal in the
85th minute was called back because of an offside position prior to
the kick, halting the offensive momentum.
"We were in complete control of the game when [the goal was
called back]," said head coach Mel Mahler. "Then we broke down
defensively and let in a goal that we could have avoided."
The defeat drops the Bonnies to 1-3 in the early season, while
the Saints improve to 3-1.
The opening of the game went in favor of the Saints when in the
sixth minute a slippery free kick bounced off a defender past David
Flynn to put Siena up 1-0.
"We have to give credit to Siena. We started the match with an
unfortunate goal playing in slippery conditions," said head coach
Mahler. "It just got past us. After the goals our kids played hard
and we did what we needed to do."
The Brown and White matched Siena with two goals in the second
half. Sam Maheu used a saved shot from Chris Leko to put the
Bonnies on the board to come within one of the Saints. The goal is
Maheu's second for the season
Less than 10 minutes later, St. Bonaventure jumped on the board
again as Siena's Ek deflected a cross from Brett Allen to tie the
game, 2-2.
Siena's Daniel Alderstad gave Siena the two-goal lead in the
63rd minute following a flurry in the box.
The tightly matched contest saw the teams with almost even
offensive stats with the Saints holding a slight edge in shots
13-12.
"We need to do the things we do well more often and we have to
prevent these types of goals from happening," said Mahler. "We have
to work on our defending. Our focus now is to regroup to prepare
for Cornell."
St. Bonaventure continues on the weekend road trip to Ithaca,
N.Y. to meet Cornell on Sept. 13. Sunday's kick off is scheduled
for 4:00 p.m.
