St. Bonaventure men's soccer saw its opening week end in a
disappointing loss as the Bonnies fell to Wright State, 3-2, in
Thursday's home opener at McGraw-Jennings Field.
St. Bonaventure jumped out quick scoring first, but could not
answer Wright State's three consecutive goals. The win opens the
season for Wright State and St. Bonaventure falls to 0-2.
"It is a very disappointing loss. Wright state played very hard
and I congratulate them on a good win on the road. I felt like we
let it slip away," said head coach Mel Mahler. "I had hoped we'd be
a little further along by now, while we've made progress, we still
have a lot of work ahead of us."
The Bonnies got on the board early, jumping out in front in the
tenth minute when Fabrizio Savarino converted a nice pass from
Brett Allen from inside the box. St. Bonaventure kept the lead
through the half.
The first of three consecutive goals came in the 55th minute
when Braden Fleak headed a quick ball past the reach of goalkeeper
David Flynn. The Raiders would come back quickly as Brad Bamberger
converted a goal off a free kick to take the lead, 2-1.
The Raiders scored again when John Velinor's goal in the 70th
minute on a missed touch by the Bonnies' defense, allowed for a
quick shot to put the Raiders up 3-1.
St. Bonaventure gave the Raiders a scare with a goal from Allen
in the 82nd minute. He hooked a wide right shot towards the net and
on a bad touch by the Wright State defense, the ball slipped by the
goalie Matt Koewler.
The Bonnies finished the game with seven shots and four corner
kicks.
"Our challenge is to find a way to regroup and focus on the next
match. I'm going to rely on our upperclassmen to lead the team in
that direction," said Mahler.
St. Bonaventure continues a home-stand against Houghton at 5:00
p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8 at McGraw-Jennings Field.
