ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure
men's soccer team continued on the winning side of things with a
pair of goals against the Bulls en route to a 2-1 victory against
Buffalo on a cold afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field.
The Brown and White's snap the Bulls' four-year winning streak,
starting back in 2005. The second consecutive win improves the club
to a 3-4 record with one more game before Atlantic 10 action.
Buffalo's loss to the Bonnies drops its overall record to 4-5.
"It was a great team effort. I think in past matches we have
been inconsistent, not putting a good 90 minutes together. We're
now playing a solid stretch of 90 minutes," said head coach Mel
Mahler. "David [Flynn] played very well. Buffalo is a team that
plays a direct style and Dave diffused a lot of those situations
today."
In the 15th minute, junior Brett Allen sent a long corner kick
to the center of the net to Tyler Bellamy. Fabrizio Savarino fired
in the quick touch from Bellamy to put the Bonnies out in front,
1-0. Savarino's goal is the third of the season.
St. Bonaventure and Buffalo went head-to-head for the remainder
of the first half as possession was shared on both sides of the
field. The Bonnies held a slight edge in shots, 3-2, and in corner
kicks 5-4 in the first half.
The Brown and White did not wait long to strike again. Senior
Sam Maheu took a pass from Allen and jetted up the right side of
the field to fire a quick shot past Buffalo keeper Nick Fetterman
to secure a 2-0 advantage. Maheu's goal is his fifth of the year.
Buffalo got on the board in the 78th minute off a corner kick
from Alex Marrello. Steffen Thoresen slipped one behind junior
keeper David Flynn. The Bulls would not bring another offensive
attack to match the Bonnies' two goals.
Keeper Flynn was on top of the ball today, picking up outside
balls and knocking down quick shots. He picked up his 15th career
win through three seasons.
St. Bonaventure travels to its final non-conference opponent,
Little 3 rival Niagara, on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The Bonnies beat the
Purple Eagles in last year's match, 2-0.
"It has been a learning process for us this year to be more
competitive through a match. We are moving forward in that
direction. We have to opportunity to build upon this success
against Niagara," said Mahler.
