Bonnies shut down Houghton 2-0

The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team snapped a two-match losing streak with a pair of goals against the Highlanders en route to a 2-0 victory against Houghton on Tuesday evening at McGraw-Jennings Field.

With the win, the Bonnies pick up their first win to move to 1-2 on their way to a weekend road trip while the Highlanders' record drops to 1-3.

"It's good to get our first win. I thought Houghton played a good game they were well coached and they really made it difficult for us in the first half," said head coach Mel Mahler. "They made our play very predictable and in doing so they were able to defend effectively."

The Bonnies and Highlanders went head-to-head for most of the first half as St. Bonaventure struggled to create chances. St. Bonaventure paced the first interval with a 6-3 shot advantage against the Highlanders.

St. Bonaventure came out strong in the second half when in the 54th minute Fabrizio Savarino put a free kick in front of the net while Dan Mitchell used a deflection from the Houghton defense to notch the goal, putting the Bonnies up, 1-0.

Just two minutes later Sam Maheu saw the ball to the back of the net as his shot from Shane Nolan's throw in slipped past the defense, securing the 2-0 victory.

"In the second half we played with a little more urgency. I think the two goals were the result of that [urgency]. By playing quicker and getting to the ball we weren't playing such a set defense. This game is definitely something to build on for the next match and the team is encouraged with the progress were making," said Mahler.

The Bonnies outshot Houghton 9-4 for the match and owned a 3-2 advantage on corner kicks. Six Bonnies registered one shot and Maheu led with three strikes. David Flynn picked up two saves in his ninth-career shutout.

St. Bonaventure heads to the road this weekend, trekking to Albany, N.Y. to face Siena on Friday, Sept. 11 and then to Ithaca, N.Y. to meet Cornell. Both kick offs are scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
