ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. —Andrew Nicholson recorded a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds, Ogo Adegboye booked 13 points and handed out five assists, and St. Bonaventure used a 23-3 first-half run to cruise to a 82-65 exhibition win over Division II Mansfield Friday night at the Reilly Center.
Leading by four at the 16:28 mark, the Bonnies went on an extended 23-3 run, powered by eight points from Nicholson and seven from Adegboye, over the next 8:33 of game action to build a 24-point lead. Freshman G Matthew Wright pushed the lead to 27 with a 3-pointer from the top of the key, before junior G Michael Davenport converted a steal into a fast break layin for a 28-point advantage, 48-20, at the half.
"Give [Mansfield] credit," said Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt. "They didn't quit and they kept fighting. They beat us by 11 in the second half and we lost some intensity."
St. Bonaventure forward Da'Quan Cook was active on both ends – notching 11 points and seven rebounds, while Yuseff Carr scored 19 points and grabbed six boards to lead the Mounties.
Nicholson's jumper to open the second half put the Bonnies up 30 – the largest lead of the game – and the Mountaineers, picked for second in the PSAC, got no closer than 22 until the closing minutes. Mansfield closed out the final 1:51 on an 8-0 run that trimmed a 25-point deficit to 17 for the final margin.
St. Bonaventure opens the regular season on the road at Canisius on Friday. The opening tip in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 8:30 p.m.
