WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A three-hour rain delay after
the second inning literally put a damper on the
opening game of the season for the St. Bonaventure baseball
team, as it fell to Northeastern, 13-1, on Saturday afternoon at
Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.
The delay came right after the end of the second inning with score
tied at 0-0.
St. Bonaventure junior Cael Johnson started the
game, throwing two scoreless innings, but did not return after the
delay. Northeastern starter Andrew Leenhouts did the same.
Two of the Brown and White's five base hits on the day came
in the extra-base variety, as double by freshman Billy
Urban and a triple by junior Brad
Steinbach (pictured) were the highlights at the play.
Steinbach's triple drove in classman Jesse
Bosnik, who went 1-for-3 with a walk.
Redshirt freshman Eddie Gray's first
collegiate appearance didn't go exactly as he planned, as the
hard-throwing 6-foot-3 lefty was touched up for 10 runs over 5.1
innings. Northeastern plated two runs in the third, four more in
the fifth and seven in the eighth.
St. Bonaventure will be back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against
Illinois State. Redshirt senior Brian Hardner is
scheduled to take the mound for the Bonnies.
