PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — With 33 fouls and 23 turnovers
to its credit, St. Bonaventure's miscues were too much to
overcome during a 78-71 Atlantic 10 loss at Saint Joseph's on
Sunday afternoon at Michael J. Hagan Arena.
The loss is the fourth in the row for the Bonnies, who fall to
9-12 on the season, including 2-6 in the A-10. St. Bonaventure has
now dropped 17 straight games in the city of “Brotherly
Love.” Saint Joseph's snaps a three-game slide to
improve to 9-14 and 3-6 in the league.
The Brown and White's 23 turnovers led to 24 SJU points,
while their 33 fouls led to the Hawks going 29-of-45 from the free
throw line. Four different players fouled out for St. Bonaventure,
as the game saw a combined 55 fouls and 40 turnovers.
Senior Jonathan Hall's third double-double
of the season featured game-highs of 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Hall's gutsy performance featured 16 points and six rebounds
in the second half.
Sophomore Andrew Nicholson finished just a
rebound shy of a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds
before fouling out for the second straight game. Senior
Chris Matthews was the only other Bonnie in double
figures with 10 points.
Senior Darrin Govens led Saint Joseph's with 22 points.
Idris Hilliard followed with 19 points on 13-of-17 from the foul
line, while senior Garrett Williamson had 16 points on 8-of-11 from
the stripe.
Leading by one, 55-54, with 8:41 to play, St. Bonaventure's
fouls allowed Saint Joseph's to climb back into the lead with
a 14-5 run. The Hawks knocked down all seven of their shots from
the line and benefitted from four Bona turnovers that occurred
during the four minute-spurt that gave the home team at 68-60 lead
with 3:45 remaining.
The Bonnies drew to within five on a pair of occasions over the
final two minutes, but couldn't overcome the loss of four
players due to fouls and Saint Joseph's 20-for-26 performance
at the foul line in the second half.
For the game, St. Bonaventure held a 40-33 edge on the glass that
included 13 offensive rebounds. The Brown and White shot a modest
44 (24-55) from the floor and 18-of-24 from the foul line.
Trailing 19-9 seven minutes and 28 seconds into the game with five
turnovers to its credit and already in the bonus with seven fouls,
St. Bonaventure cut down on its mistakes and attacked the basket
during a 16-0 run that helped it take its first lead of the game at
25-19. Nicholson got the run started with six straight points
followed by five in a row by Hall. Back-to-back three-pointers from
Matthews and junior Ogo Adegboye capped the run
with eight minutes left in the half.
After reeling off those 16 consecutive points in just three
minutes and 48 seconds, the Bonnies hit an offensive lull over the
final eight minutes of the half. The Hawks out-scored the Brown and
White 14-8 over the final 8:01 to knot the score at 33-33 at the
break.
A sloppy opening 20 minutes featured combined 23 fouls, while the
Bonnies turned the ball over 11 times. St. Bonaventure did connect
on 11-of-24 from the field, while the Hawks hit just 11-of-28 from
the floor and 9-of-19 from the charity stripe.
After playing five of its first eight A-10 games on the road, St.
Bonaventure will enjoy a three-game homestand at the Reilly Center.
The three-game stretch will begin with Fordham on Wednesday, Feb.
10 at 7 p.m.
