Bonnies face Big 10 foe Northwestern in Round Two on
Monday
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Behind a combined
49 points from senior Dana Mitchell and sophomore
Jessica Jenkins, St. Bonaventure pulled away late
in the first half and never looked back en route to a convincing
76-50 win against Robert Morris in the opening round of the WNIT on
Thursday night at the Reilly Center.
The Bonnies equal last year's single-season record win
total of 23 and in the process move onto play Northwestern in the
second round. St. Bonaventure welcomes the Wildcats to the Reilly
Center on Monday at 7 p.m.
The Colonials, who won the NEC Regular Season title, finish the
season with a 23-9 record. RMU earned an automatic bid into the
WNIT for winning their regular season crown and failing to win the
conference tournament.
Jenkins and Mitchell nearly out-scored the Colonials by
themselves, combining to go 18-of-34 from the field for 49
points. Jenkins hit five three-pointers en route to 22 points
while Mitchell hit a season-high 11 buckets to add 27 points.
After leading the Bonnies in scoring for the 18th
time this season, Mitchell is now just five points away from 2,000
for her career. The senior also grabbed a team high eight
rebounds and dished out four assists.
The Bonnies shot 55 percent (30-55) from the field including
eight from long range. The Bonnies passed out a season-high
20 assists on their season-best 30 buckets. Robert Morris
shot just 40 percent (19-48) from the floor including just 3-of-11
from behind the arc.
A 32-7 run that stretched from the six minute mark in the first
half until the 10:54 mark in the second secured the Bonnies'
victory. A layup by Armelia Horton gave St.
Bonaventure its biggest lead of the game (32), 72-40 at the 6:45
mark.
The Brown and White jumped out to an early 8-2 lead courtesy of
back-to-back threes from Jenkins and a short-range jumper from
Mitchell. However, the Colonials quickly pulled within one, 9-8
with 15:24 left in the half.
The teams traded baskets for the next five minutes before senior
Tiara Johnson hit consecutive treys, her first
three-pointers of the season, to give the Bonnies a 26-20 lead at
the third media timeout.
St. Bonaventure's 12-3 run through the last six minutes of
the first half ballooned its lead to 40-25 at the half. The
Colonials went 1-for-5 and committed five turnovers during the
stretch. The Bonnies' 40 first-half points matches a
season-high set earlier this season against Niagara.
Sophomore Megan Van Tatenhove added eight
points while Horton joined Johnson in chipping in six. Of the 12
Bonnies that saw time, eight hit at least one basket.
Freshman Vega Gimeno-Martinez hit a last-second trey to lead the
Colonials with 15 points while Bianca Hooten added 12. Robert
Morris' leading scorer, Angela Pace, added just nine points
– well under her 16 point average.
