BUFFALO, N.Y. — St. Bonaventure sophomore
Nick Brennen (pictured) ripped two home runs for
the second straight game and the Bonnies pounded out double-digit
hits for the eighth time this season en route to a 12-6 win at Big
4 rival Canisius on Wednesday afternoon at Demske Sports Complex.
Brennen's second consecutive game with multiple home runs
gives him a team-high six on the season and a gaudy 10 RBI over his
last two contests. Brennen went 3-for-4 in the game with two runs
scored and four RBI. The St. Marys, Pa. product has a home run in
three of his last four games and four in his last nine at-bats.
The win moves St. Bonaventure to 4-8 heading into the start of
Atlantic 10 play this weekend. The Bonnies will head south for
their opening three-game conference set against perennial power
Charlotte. Game one of the three-day weekend series will take place
on Friday, March 26 at 6 p.m.
The Bonnies scored all 12 of their runs over four different
innings en route to doubling-up the Griffs. Nine of the 11 players
that made plate appearances came away with a hit to accumulate the
team's total of 16.
Juniors Jesse Bosnik and Brad
Steinbach - the other two-thirds of the St. Mary's
bats – each had two hits and picked up their team-leading
fifth multi-RBI games. Bosnik's single and double extended
his hit streak to 10 games.
Sophomore Ryan Skellie's two-hit game
included a two-run triple in the fourth, while freshmen
Austin Ingraham and Billy Urban
rounded out the multi-hit performers.
Brennen also started the game on the mound before giving way
after two innings. A total of seven different pitchers saw time
with freshman Andrew Revello picking up the win
after completing the fifth inning. Making his first collegiate
appearance on the mound, Urban was the story out of the bullpen,
tossing three scoreless innings to close the game and pick up the
save.
St. Bonaventure set the tone with a five-run top of the first
and never looked back. Two Canisius errors kept the Bona first
inning alive until Brennen's first of two home runs closed
out the inning.
Skellie's two-run triple in the fourth made it 7-2 Bonnies
and Brennen's second two-run homer in the sixth pushed the
lead to 10-4.
