CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After getting almost two complete weeks away from the diamond due to bad weather, the St. Bonaventure softball team headed south to Charlotte where it dropped its Atlantic 10 opening series, 8-0 and 9-1 on Saturday afternoon at the DL Phillips Complex.

The Bonnies now drop to 5-10 on the early season while Charlotte improves to 19-6 after dropping only three games at its home field.

Charlotte had a five-run first inning to jump out in front and did not look back notching three runs in the second in the five inning first game. Charlotte's Serena Smith had a three-run homer to open the inning. Two singles and a Bonnie error scored two more runs before senior Sherri Thompson struck out Lindsay Holloman to end the inning.

In the second, Smith hit a triple to score Kendra McCall who stole second after singling to right. Tenaya Tucker then hit a home run to bring in Smith and secure the 49ers' win as the Bonnies never reached third base through the five innings.

In game two, the Bonnies were just one run down 2-1 until the bottom of the sixth when the 49ers tallied seven runs to pull ahead and take the sweep. Freshman Jessenia Andujar, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, scored the lone run of the series on a Stephanie Narde RBI after a double to right field.

Charlotte scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the win. Three singles and two doubles and two triples helped the 49ers take the sweep of both team's conference opening series.

Thompson got the loss in game one while sophomore Erin Nargi dropped the second game. Thompson tossed four innings, earning five runs on six hits and tossing one strike out.

St. Bonaventure returns to action next weekend, traveling to Philadelphia to take on Temple and Saint Joseph's, continuing Atlantic 10 action. The Bonnies open their weekend at Temple on Friday at 3 p.m.
