UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Dayton's long range
shooting was enough for the Flyers to defeat the St. Bonaventure
women's basketball team 83-66 in the quarterfinal game of the
Atlantic 10 Championship at Show Place Arena on Saturday night.
St. Bonaventure drops to 22-9 on the season and awaits the
possibility of a postseason berth. Dayton advances to the
semifinals, improving to 24-6 and takes on the winner of the
Temple/Duquesne game.
Redshirt sophomore Armelia Horton paced the
Bonnies with a career-high 23 points, going 7-of-13 from the floor
and 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. She also dished out a
team-high four assists and picked up two steals and led the
Bonnies' for the fifth consecutive game in rebounding
grabbing eight.
Senior Dana Mitchell was the only other Bonnie
joining Horton in double-digits, adding 18 of her own which
included 13 in the second half. She went 5-of-14 from the floor and
8-for-11 from the line.
St. Bonaventure shot 35 percent (18-51) from the field including
3-of-9 from beyond the arc while Dayton fired on all cylinders
making 29-of-62 (47 percent) including 11-of-27 from long range.
Helping from beyond the arc was sophomore Justine Raterman who led
the Flyers with 20 points on 8-of-12 from the floor including a
game-high four from beyond the arc.
The Flyers showed their size, dominating the boards 43-30
including 13 offensive rebounds that led to 20 second chance
points. The Flyers also capitalized on the Bonnies'13
turnovers scoring 23 points.
Despite the Brown and White hitting the first basket courtesy of
Mitchell, the Flyers led for the remainder of the game, taking
their largest lead of the game (18), 70-52, with 4:27 left in the
game. The Bonnies closed to within three twice early in the second
half, but could not muster enough to push past Dayton.
Dayton jumped out in front 28-13 courtesy of four of the
Flyers' six first half three-pointers with 8:01 left in the
game. The 15-point deficit was the largest of the half before
Horton sparked a 10-0 run with a short-range jumper.
Sophomore Jessica Jenkins hit her only three of
the night followed by Horton's traditional three-point play
before Megan Van Tatenhove hit two from the line
to bring the Bonnies within five, 28-23, with 5:35 on the clock.
The Flyers pulled ahead to a 10-point lead, before a three-point
play by Horton closed the half 37-30. Horton picked up 12 of her
points in the first half while grabbing six rebounds.
Senior Andrea Doneth hit eight points including
two from the long range and grabbed five rebounds. Van Tatenhove
grabbed a team-high four offensive rebounds to lead to seven total
while chipping in six points.
Dayton's Patrice Lalor (18) and Kayla Moses (10) joined
Raterman in double digits. Brittany Wilson also grabbed a game-high
10 rebounds
St. Bonaventure now waits until “Selection Monday”
on March 15 to see if they earned a postseason berth.
