BUFFALO, N.Y. — St. Bonaventure's three-run rally
in the sixth inning of the opening game helped the Bonnies take
game one, 5-4, before falling in the nightcap, 12-2, of a
doubleheader against Big 4 foe Buffalo on Tuesday at Amherst
Audubon Field.
The split moves St. Bonaventure's record to 6-19 on the season,
while the Bulls are now 14-15. The Brown and White will have two
days off from game action before hosting Saint Joseph's a
three-game Atlantic 10 series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. at Fred
Handler Park.
Game one featured big performances by a group of underclassmen,
as eight of the nine starters picked up a hit, including six by
freshmen and sophomores. Sophomore Nick
Brennen went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and
started the sixth-inning rally with his second two-bagger. Making
his first collegiate start, freshman Eric
Jutca was the other star at the plate, going 2-for-3
with the eventual game-winning RBI.
On the mound, freshman Eddie
Gray picked up his second win of the season by going
five innings and allowing four runs while striking out three. The
Bona bullpen tossed a pair of scoreless inning to close the game as
senior Cory
Sudbrook and junior Jamie
Wallschlaeger pitched the final two innings.
Wallschlaeger picked up his first career save by recording the
final four outs.
Trailing 3-2 in the top of the sixth, the Bonnies opened the
inning by putting runners on the corners without an out. Junior
Derek
Speaker delivered a pinch-hit groundout that drove in
Brennen from third to tie the game at 3-3. Freshman Billy
Urban, who singled, came home on the team's second
successful pinch-hit opportunity when classmate Jason
Radwan delivered a sacrifice fly to give the Bonnies
at 4-3 advantage. With two outs, Jutca stepped to the plate and
delivered a single to left field, allowing fellow freshman
Austin
Ingraham to score the eventual game-winning run from
second.
Despite getting its first two batters on base, Buffalo came away
with just one run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to solid relief
pitching. Wallschlaeger closed the door in the sixth and finished
over the seventh by retiring the Bulls in order.
Game two belonged to the Buffalo from the start, as the Bulls
opened a 5-0 lead by the end of the third inning.
The Bonnies struck back with two runs in the top of the fourth
to make it 5-2, but UB put the game away with six runs in its half
of the fourth.
For the game, Buffalo out-hit the Bonnies by a commanding 17-3
margin, while three Bona errors led to six unearned runs. Radwan
had two of the team's three hits, while Speaker had the other.
