Wallschlaeger picks up first career win; Sudbrook
sets all-time appearances record
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Battling reoccurring
snow storms and temperatures in the 30s, St.
Bonaventure rallied with five unanswered runs to close the game en
route to a 10-8 comeback Atlantic 10 win over visiting Saint
Joseph's on Saturday at Fred Handler Park.
The game was the first of a scheduled three-game weekend set
after Friday's opener was cancelled due to rain and cold
temperatures. The two teams will attempt to play the final two
games of the series on Sunday beginning at noon.
Junior pitcher Jamie Wallschlaeger was the
story on the mound, picking up his first career win to help the
Bonnies improve to 7-19 overall and 2-8 in the A-10. The Hawks fell
to 11-17 on the season and 6-4 in the A-10.
Wallschlaeger entered the game in the top of the third with the
Bonnies trailing 6-0 and went on to limit the Hawks to just two
unearned runs over a career-high 6.1 innings. Wallschlaeger
scattered six hits and left the game with just one out remaining
and the beneficiary of a 10-8 Bona lead.
With right-handed David Valesente due up, senior Cory Sudbrook (pictured) was brought on to record the final out
and make his program record-breaking 71st career relief
appearance. Sudbrook did just that, getting Valesente to strike out
swinging in just four pitches for his fourth career save.
The Bona comeback began with a five-run bottom of the third that
was highlighted by a three-run home run by freshman Billy Urban. The first two runs of the inning came on a single
by junior Ryan Mosher and a double by
Derek Speaker. The Hawks chose to intentionally
walk junior Jesse Bosnik with two outs to get to
Urban. The Gates Mills, Ohio product made Saint Joseph's pay,
drilling his first career home run over the left field wall.
The Hawks built an 8-5 lead with one run in the sixth and one
more in the seventh before a two-run bottom of the seventh brought
the Bonnies back within one, at 8-7.
After a scoreless top of the eighth, the Brown and White banged
up four different SJU pitchers to the tune of three runs in their
half of the inning. After leading off the inning with a single,
sophomore Ryan Skellie scored on a sacrifice fly
by freshman Eric Jutca to knot the game at 8-8.
Speaker promptly drilled his second double of the game over the
head of the left field allowing fleet-footed Nick Cunliffe to score all the way from first for a 9-8 Bona
lead. Bosnik brought home the insurance run two batters later with
his team-leading 12th double of the season down the left
field line to score Speaker.
St. Bonaventure overcame five errors by pounding out 13 hits to
score double figure runs for the third time in A-10 play. Speaker
turned in a huge game from the leadoff spot, going 4-for-5 with two
runs scored, two doubles and two RBI. Each of the other eight
positional starters all had one hit.
