Wallschlaeger picks up first career win; Sudbrook sets all-time appearances record

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Battling reoccurring snow storms and temperatures in the 30s, St. Bonaventure rallied with five unanswered runs to close the game en route to a 10-8 comeback Atlantic 10 win over visiting Saint Joseph's on Saturday at Fred Handler Park.

The game was the first of a scheduled three-game weekend set after Friday's opener was cancelled due to rain and cold temperatures. The two teams will attempt to play the final two games of the series on Sunday beginning at noon.

Junior pitcher Jamie Wallschlaeger was the story on the mound, picking up his first career win to help the Bonnies improve to 7-19 overall and 2-8 in the A-10. The Hawks fell to 11-17 on the season and 6-4 in the A-10.

Wallschlaeger entered the game in the top of the third with the Bonnies trailing 6-0 and went on to limit the Hawks to just two unearned runs over a career-high 6.1 innings. Wallschlaeger scattered six hits and left the game with just one out remaining and the beneficiary of a 10-8 Bona lead.

With right-handed David Valesente due up, senior Cory Sudbrook (pictured) was brought on to record the final out and make his program record-breaking 71st career relief appearance. Sudbrook did just that, getting Valesente to strike out swinging in just four pitches for his fourth career save.

The Bona comeback began with a five-run bottom of the third that was highlighted by a three-run home run by freshman Billy Urban. The first two runs of the inning came on a single by junior Ryan Mosher and a double by Derek Speaker. The Hawks chose to intentionally walk junior Jesse Bosnik with two outs to get to Urban. The Gates Mills, Ohio product made Saint Joseph's pay, drilling his first career home run over the left field wall.

The Hawks built an 8-5 lead with one run in the sixth and one more in the seventh before a two-run bottom of the seventh brought the Bonnies back within one, at 8-7.

After a scoreless top of the eighth, the Brown and White banged up four different SJU pitchers to the tune of three runs in their half of the inning. After leading off the inning with a single, sophomore Ryan Skellie scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Eric Jutca to knot the game at 8-8. Speaker promptly drilled his second double of the game over the head of the left field allowing fleet-footed Nick Cunliffe to score all the way from first for a 9-8 Bona lead. Bosnik brought home the insurance run two batters later with his team-leading 12th double of the season down the left field line to score Speaker.

St. Bonaventure overcame five errors by pounding out 13 hits to score double figure runs for the third time in A-10 play. Speaker turned in a huge game from the leadoff spot, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored, two doubles and two RBI. Each of the other eight positional starters all had one hit.
