ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure baseball
team built off its recent Atlantic 10
series victory this past weekend by sweeping both games of a
non-conference doubleheader from visiting Bucknell on Tuesday
afternoon at Fred Handler Park.
The Bonnies overcame a late deficit in the opener to explode for
seven runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-3 win. The Brown
and White then held off a late Bucknell push in the top of the
seventh for the 6-5 victory in game two. Both games were
seven-inning affairs.
The two wins give St. Bonaventure a three-game win streak and
victories in four of its last five games. The Bonnies are now 10-20
on the season heading into this weekend's three-game A-10 series at
Duquesne.
Freshman Robert
Nalepa got the nod on the mound in game one and
despite holding a potent Bison lineup to just three runs over the
first six innings, the Bonnies trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of
the sixth.
Bucknell starter Russell Siedell retired the first batter of the
sixth and then gave up a double to freshman Billy
Urban and walked sophomore Nick
Brennen before leaving the game. That's when the
trouble started for the Bison, as the next five batters recorded
hits off the Bucknell bullpen. Sophomore Ryan
Skellie doubled home two runs, followed by an RBI
double by freshman Austin
Ingraham, a pinch-hit RBI single by senior Nick
Cunliffe, a single by junior Ryan
Mosher and a two-run triple by junior Derek
Speaker. In all, the Bonnies scored seven runs on six
hits in the inning to take the win.
Nalepa went 6.1 innings en route to evening his record at 2-2.
Nalepa scattered nine hits, issued no walks and had five
strikeouts. Junior and game two starter Jamie
Wallschlaeger recorded the second out of the seventh
inning before senior Cory
Sudbrook closed the door to earn his second save in
his last three appearances.
In game two, Bucknell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first
inning off Wallschlaeger, who made his first career start.
The Bonnies battled back in the second and third innings,
plating five runs to take a 5-3 lead. Ingraham provided all the run
production in the second, blasting a three-run home run over the
right field wall to knot the game at 3-3. In the third, it was
Urban driving in both runs with a double down the left field line
to score Speaker and freshman Jason
Radwan, who both singled.
With a 5-3 lead in hand, the Bona bullpen took over the next
four innings as four different pitchers gave up just one run and
two hits from the second inning through the sixth. Sophomore
Jordan
Crane worked out of a jam in the third by inducing a
ground ball double play and a fly out to right field. Crane was the
eventual winner on the mound.
St. Bonaventure picked up what looked to be an insurance run at
the time, but turned into the eventual game-winning run in the
bottom of the fifth when Skellie drove home a run on a groundout to
make it 6-4.
After retiring the side in order in the sixth, Urban ran into
trouble in the seventh looking to pick up his second career save.
Bucknell loaded the bases with no outs to opening the inning and
drew within one, 6-5, on a ground out to second. With runners on
first and second, Urban intentionally walked the next batter to
load the bases and bring a possible game-ending double play back
into play. Urban made it easy on his defense, though, striking out
the last two batters to end the Bucknell comeback and seal the
win.
Urban was the star of the day, reaching base in all seven plate
appearances over the two games. Urban went 4-for-5 with a walk and
was hit by pitch. His lone blemish on his day at the dish was when
he reached on an error in fifth inning of game two. Urban's save
was the second of his career and the sixth of the season by a
Bonnie.
Over the two games, the Bonnies pounded out 18 hits, including
seven of the extra-base variety. Ingraham's third home run of the
season in the opener gave the Brown and White 25 home runs on the
season, surpassing all of last year's total of 24. Ingraham and
Speaker each had three hits on the afternoon. Speaker is 10-for-21
at the plate over the last five games.
