BONNIES EXTEND DOUBLE FIGURE HIT STREAK TO SIX
GAMES
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — St. Bonaventure
pounded out 22 hits and scored 13 runs as it earned a split during
Tuesday's Big 4 doubleheader against visiting Canisius at
Fred Handler Park.
The Bonnies led from start to finish in the opener, cruising to
a 7-2 win before falling in the nightcap, 7-6. The split gives the
Brown and White an edge in the season series against the Griffs
after picking up a 12-6 win in Buffalo on March. 24.
St. Bonaventure now sports a record of 13-22 entering this
weekend's Atlantic 10 series at Saint Louis. Canisius now
stands at 28-15 on the season.
Despite playing a pair of seven-inning contests, the Bonnies
pounded out 11 hits in each game to extend their double figure hits
streak to six games. Highlighting the 22-hit afternoon was junior
Jesse Bosnik, who went 4-for-6 with a pair of
doubles, a home run and four RBI. Bosnik's big day upped his
batting average back over .400 while his two doubles gave him 15 on
the year to rank tied for seventh in the single-season record
books.
Six different pitchers took the mound in the opener, led by four
straight scoreless innings by senior Dennis Sherba, senior Brian Hardner and freshman
Andrew Revello to start the game. The Bona defense
aided in keeping the Griffs off the board early on, as the Brown
and White turned a double-play in each of the first three innings
and four in the game.
With the pitching staff and defense holding Canisius scoreless,
the Bonnies plated a run in the first and second innings and three
more in the third to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Freshman
Billy Urban's RBI single and sophomore
Michael Grieco's sacrifice fly brought home
the first two runs in the first and second inning, respectively.
Bosnik got things rolling in the third with his first double of the
day to make it 3-0. Playing for the first time in eight games,
junior Brad Steinbach brought home the fourth run
with a single followed by another RBI from Grieco on a single into
centerfield.
The Griffs got on the board in the top of the fifth with two
runs to make it 5-2, but a two-run home run by Bosnik, his
team-leading ninth home run of the season, pushed the lead back to
five, at 7-2.
Revello was credited with the win to improve to 3-2 on the
season, while Canisius start Nathan Linseman got the loss after
giving up five earned runs on six hits over the first 2.1 innings
of the game.
Game two began with Bosnik delivering an RBI double to the
opposite field to give the Bonnies 1-0 lead through the first.
After a scoreless second inning, Canisius plated two runs off of
starter Michael Pease, who worked 2.1 innings and
struck out two.
Trailing 2-1, St. Bonaventure responded with three runs of its
own in its half of the third inning to take the lead back, at 4-2.
Making just his third career start, freshman Eric Jutca provided the big hit of the inning with a two-run
single through the right side. Senior Nick Cunliffe's groundout to first base brought home the
third run of the inning.
The Bona lead didn't last long, as the Canisius provided
the third and final lead change of the game with a game-changing
four-run top of the fourth that gave the visitors a 6-4 edge.
St. Bonaventure's run in the fourth and one more in the
seventh sandwiched around a Canisius run provided the 7-6 outcome.
The Brown and White did leave the game-tying run on first in the
seventh inning.
Canisius reliever Josh Marshall tossed four innings to earn the
win. Sophomore Jordan Crane was tabbed with the loss after giving
up four earned runs in the fourth inning.
Sophomores Nick Brennen and Ryan Skellie along with Urban and classmate Jason Radwan all finished the two games with three hits. Skellie
and Radwan both scored three runs and had two doubles on the
afternoon, putting them both over double figure doubles for the
season.
Game one of this weekend's A-10 series at Saint Louis will
begin on Friday, April 30 at 6 p.m. ET.
