ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The month of May is usually when
weekend series' take on a new meaning as
the regular season comes to a close. Apparently, May started a day
early as St. Bonaventure and Saint Louis battled for 14 innings
before the Billikens plated the game-winning run of the four hour
and 31 minute Atlantic 10 series-opening marathon at The Billiken
Sports Center.
The wild affair featured a combined 30 hits, 10 different
pitchers and five errors before a bases loaded walk to SLU's
cleanup hitter Jon Myers brought home the game-winning run.
St. Bonaventure overcame a 6-0 deficit to tie the game and
eventually force extra-innings thanks to a five-run fifth inning
and one more run in the sixth. Senior Nick
Cunliffe drove home two of the runs in the fifth with
a double to right center. Freshman Jason
Radwan contributed a RBI single, while junior
Jesse
Bosnik belted a triple for his 26th
extra-base hit to drive home the last run of the fifth. After
singling and stealing second, freshman Austin
Ingraham scored the run to tie the game at 6-6 in the
top of the sixth on an RBI single by junior Brad
Steinbach.
After getting tagged for six runs in the first four innings, St.
Bonaventure starter and two-time reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week
Eddie
Gray settled down and kept the Billikens off the
scoreboard in the fifth, sixth and seventh – his final three
innings of work.
On the flipside, SLU starter Bryan Cotton, who entered the
weekend in a tie for the A-10 lead for wins with seven, worked an
unheard-of 10.2 innings. Cotton tossed 164 pitches for the game and
was only scored on in three of the innings.
After being touched up for six runs over the fifth and sixth
innings, Cotton kept the Bonnies scoreless until the top of the
11th when a pair of SLU errors brought home the seventh
straight run from the Brown and White to give the visitors a 7-6
advantage.
Freshman reliever Billy
Urban worked a scoreless 10th, but couldn't
put the game away as a walk to start the 11th inning
eventually came around to score and keep the game going.
Despite putting the leadoff runner on in both the
12th and 13th innings, the Bonnies were
unable to plate a run. Saint Louis took advantage of escaping the
jams in the 14th inning, as a bases loaded two-out walk
scored the game-winning run and sealed the heartbreaking loss for
the Brown and White.
With the loss, St. Bonaventure slipped to 13-23 on the season,
including 5-11 in A-10 action. The Billikens are 6-1 at home this
year in A-10 home games, as they improved to 9-7 in league
play.
Bosnik and sophomore Nick
Brennen paced a 14-hit afternoon for the Brown and
White. Bosnik's three hits brought his season total to a
career-high 61, making him just the third player in program history
to put together back-to-back 60-hit campaigns. Brennen went 3-for-7
on the day, highlighted by his 11th double of the
season. All nine positional starters contributed at least one
hit.
Gray earned a no-decision after going seven innings. Junior
Jamie
Wallschlaeger and senior Cory
Sudbrook turned in scoreless innings in the eighth and
ninth, respectively. Urban worked two innings handing the reigns
over to senior Brian
Hardner, who was tabbed for the loss. The game-winning
run came around to score on a walk issued by sophomore Jordan
Crane, but the runner was credited to Hardner.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m.
ET.
