PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Despite a strong
pitching performance from redshirt freshman Eddie
Gray,
St. Bonaventure couldn't overcome stranding 10 runners on base en
route to a 3-0 loss at La Salle in the Atlantic 10 weekend series
opener at Hank DeVincent Field Thursday afternoon.
The loss drops the Brown and White's overall record to 16-27 on
the season, including 7-15 in the A-10. La Salle, who has now won
the opening game of each of its five A-10 home series, ups its
record to 18-28 on the season and is one of nine A-10 teams with
double figure wins at 11-11.
Gray (4-5) equaled a season-high with eight strikeouts, working
six or more innings for the fifth straight start in A-10 play. In
all, Gray tossed seven innings, giving up eight hits and three
runs, which all came over three different innings. Gray now has 16
strikeouts in his last 13 innings of work.
La Salle starter Eric Van Wyk was equally impressive on the
mound with 6.1 shutout innings. Van Wyk scattered five hits, struck
out five and worked out of four walks to improve to 6-1 on the
season.
St. Bonaventure finished the game with six hits while also
working six walks, but was unable to bring around a run for just
the second time this season. Even more frustrating, the Bonnies put
the leadoff batter on base in five of nine innings and left six
runners in scoring position.
Batting in the cleanup and No. 5 spot in the lineup,
respectively, freshman Billy
Urban and sophomore Nick Brennen
(pictured) accounted for two hits each. The multi-hit game
was the 18th of the season for both Urban and Brennen,
including their third in a row. Brennen led off the second inning
with his 13th double of the season for the lone
extra-base hit for the Bonnies.
After holding the Explorers scoreless in the first two innings
despite allowing the leadoff runner to get on, Gray couldn't do the
same in the third as a leadoff walk to Tony Negrin eventually led
to the first run of the game and a 1-0 Explorers lead.
A leadoff solo home run by Jeff Flax in the fourth and one more
run in the sixth provided the Explorers with all the run support
they needed.
Senior Cory
Sudbrook recorded an out in the eighth inning in his
career-best 22nd relief appearance of the year. Sudbrook
is now just one appearance away from setting the single-season
record of 23 set by Matt Agostinelli in 2006. Junior Jamie
Wallschlaeger got the last two outs of the game in his
21st pitching appearance of the year.
The second game of three-game series will begin on Friday at 1
p.m.
