ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — For the second straight
game in the series the St. Bonaventure offensive couldn't find its
rhythm as it dropped a 6-3 decision to visiting Temple on a
beautiful Friday afternoon at Fred Handler Park.
The loss dips the Brown and White's record to 16-31 overall and
7-19 in the Atlantic 10 heading into Saturday's season finale at
noon. The Owls (14-36), on the other hand, have now taken two of
their last three A-10 series to close the year and are 10-16 in the
A-10.
Temple received a solid pitching performance for the second
consecutive day, this time from redshirt senior Matt Mongiardini
who went seven innings in the win. Mongiardini held the Bonnies
hitless through the first three innings and struck out four for the
game.
St. Bonaventure managed eight hits in the game, marking the
third straight game they've failed to finish with double-digit hits
– the team's longest streak of the season. The youthful, but
potent Bona lineup had supplied double figure hit totals in 28 of
44 games before its recent three-game stretch.
Junior Jesse
Bosnik's double in the fourth inning was his
20th two-bagger of the season making him the first
player in program history with at least 20 doubles, 10 home runs
and 10 stolen bases all in the same season. Bosnik's
20th double is good for a tie for third all-time in
single-season history. The double was also Bosnik's 75th
hit of the season and the team's 149th extra-base
hit.
Playing the second-to-last game of his collegiate career, senior
Nick
Cunliffe had the lone multi-hit afternoon hit for the
Bonnies, going 2-for-4 with an RBI from the leadoff spot. Junior
Brad
Steinbach also drove in a run with a single in the
fourth inning.
St. Bonaventure spotted Temple a 5-0 lead through three and a
half innings. The Owls plated three runs in the third and two more
in the fifth off of starter Andrew
Revello.
The Bonnies began to climb back into the game behind a solid
relief outing from junior Jamie
Wallschlaeger, who retired 12 of the first 13 batters
he faced. While Wallschlaeger kept the Owls at bay for three
innings, St. Bonaventure plated a run in the fourth, fifth and
seventh to climb within two, at 5-3.
Temple added another run in the top of the eight to make it 6-3
and then handed the ball over to reliever Ryan Thomas who picked up
the two-inning save.
St. Bonaventure and its final seniors will take the diamond for
the final time on Saturday in the series finale at noon. Each
member of the senior class will take the ceremonial lap around the
base paths following the game.
