ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Trailing 12-4
entering the bottom of the sixth inning, St. Bonaventure
rallied with 13 unanswered runs to close the game over its final
three at-bats for a stunning 17-12 Atlantic 10 win over Temple in
the final game of the season for both teams on Saturday at Fred
Handler Park.
It was a fitting end to the season for the youthful Bonnies, who
used their 29th double-digit hit total of the season and
15th game of 10 or more runs to come away with their
third win of the season when trailing after the sixth inning.
The rally started in the bottom of the sixth when junior
Jesse Bosnik's two-run single through the
right side not only drew the Brown and White to within 12-6, but
also broke the single-season record for RBI in a season with his
59th and 60th runs driven in. After a double
by junior Brad Steinbach (pictured) and a walk to
Nick Brennen loaded the bases, it was freshman
Billy Urban's grand slam over the left field
wall that officially gave the Bonnies new life and made the score
12-10 in favor of Temple.
An RBI single by freshman Jason Radwan and
Steinbach in the bottom of the seventh inning completed the
comeback and tied the score at 12-12.
Making just his fifth pitching appearance of the season,
Steinbach sat the Owls down in order in the top of the eighth and
gave way to the Bona offense, which exploded for five more runs in
its half of the eighth for a commanding 17-12 lead. Two Temple
errors kick-started the big inning before junior Jamie Wallschlaeger's pinch-hit two-run single up the
middle plated the eventual game-winning run. With two runners on
base, Bosnik rudely greeted Temple reliever Steve Visnic with his
team-leading fifth triple of the year to bring home both runs as he
also came all the way around to score on a miscue in the relay
throw.
With a comfortable five-run lead, 17-12, in hand, Steinbach
finished off the Owls in order in the ninth for his first win of
the season. Steinbach sat down all eight batters he faced in the
game.
St. Bonaventure finishes the 2010 campaign with a 17-31 overall
record, including an 8-19 mark in A-10 action. The Bonnies are
slated to return 21 of the 25 players on their current roster which
accounted for 92 percent of the hits (463), all 39 home runs and
all 17 wins on the mound this season.
The wild affair featured a run in each inning except for the
ninth, 35 hits, 13 different pitchers and eight errors. After
supplying just 14 hits over the first two games of the series, the
Bonnies equaled a season-high with 18 in the win.
Bosnik continued to etch his name into the single-season record
books with a big afternoon at the plate in which he went 4-for-6
with four runs scored, his team-leading fifth triple and four
RBI.
Bosnik's third campaign in the Brown and White will go
down as one of the best offensive seasons in program history. The
St. Mary's, Pa. product moved into the single-season record
books for batting average (.389/7th), runs scored
(50/4th), hits (79/2nd), doubles
(20/t-3rd), triples (5/t-2nd), home runs
(11/t-4th), RBI (62/1st) and slugging
percentage (.696/5th) – all of which were
team-bests.
Urban capped a superb freshman season by going 2-for-5 with
three runs scored, his third home run of the season and a
season-best five RBI. Urban finished one hit shy of Brian
Pellegrini's freshman record of 61 hits set in 2004.
Steinbach was also solid at the plate with three hits, including a
double, while Radwan came away with the 17th multi-hit
game of his freshman season. Finishing with his first career
multi-hit game, freshman catcher Zachery Buckler
went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Senior pitchers Brian Hardner, Dennis Sherba and Cory Sudbrook all saw time on
the mound, while senior Nick Cunliffe went 1-for-5
with a double from the lead off position. Playing in their final
career game, all four took the traditional final lap around the
base-paths at McGraw-Jennings Field following the game and were
joined by senior manager Jason MacBain.
