ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — Sophomore
Nick
Brennen's second
career grand slam and an eight-inning pitching performance by
freshman Andrew
Revello helped St. Bonaventure pick up a 7-3 win over
Rhode Island in game two and earn a split in an Atlantic 10
doubleheader Sunday at Fred Handler Park.
A five-run seventh inning in game one helped the Rams dig out of
a three-run deficit and rally for a 14-11 victory.
The split moves the Brown and White to 16-26 on the season,
including 7-14 in the A-10. Rhode Island, who entered the weekend
in a tie for second place in the A-10, is now 24-21 overall and
13-8 in the conference.
After being three-hit in the series opener on Friday, the
Bonnies responded with 18 runs on 24 hits over the doubleheader
against URI starters that have combined for 14 wins on the year.
Half of the Brown and White's hits were of the extra-base variety
broken down by eight doubles, one triple and three home runs.
Brennen highlighted the 12-hit attack in each game by going
4-for-8 with three runs scored, two home runs and seven RBI.
Brennen drilled a home run in each game, pushing his season total
to nine and giving him 40 RBI. With one more home run, Brennen will
join fellow St. Marys, Pa. native Jesse
Bosnik in double-digit homers and become just the
second set of teammates in school history to accomplish the feat in
the same season.
Bosnik's four-hit afternoon moved him to sole possession of
second place on the single-season hit list with 72. Bosnik ripped
three doubles on the day, giving him 18 on the year, the
fourth-best total in single-season history. Freshman Billy
Urban drove in a run in each of his first three
at-bats in game one and finished the day 4-for-8 with two doubles
and five RBI. Junior Brad
Steinbach and freshman Jason
Radwan each had three hits on the day. Steinbach
blasted his fifth home run of the year in the opener.
Following a wild opener that featured a combined 25 runs, 27
hits, 10 walks, nine different pitchers and four errors, game two
proved to be much different when URI starter Dan Rossignol, the
A-10 leader in wins (8), took the mound.
The Bonnies rudely greeted Rossignol with six runs on eight hits
over his brief three innings of work. Brennen provided the biggest
blow in the bottom of the first with a grand slam over the right
field wall that made it 4-0. St. Bonaventure tacked on another run
in the second and one more in the third to vault out to a 6-0
advantage.
The six runs were more than enough for Revello, who out-dueled
his senior counterpart by going a season-high eight innings and
limiting the URI lineup to just six hits after they cranked out 15
the game before. The win improves Revello's record to 4-2 on the
season, moving him into a tie for the team lead in wins (4) with
fellow freshman Eddie
Gray.
With finals week in session, St. Bonaventure will have four days
off until it heads to Philadelphia for its final A-10 road series
of the year at La Salle. Game one of three game set will begin on
Thursday, May 13 at 3 p.m.
