WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Sacred Heart (2-1) scored eight runs in the 8th inning to spoil the baseball team's (0-1) season opener on Saturday afternoon in sunny Florida, 15-1.
Junior left-hander Nick Brennen got the start on the mound, and pitched a scoreless game into the 5th inning. In the top of the frame, the Pioneers broke the grid-locked affair with a sacrifice fly, and then tallied another run following St. Bonaventure's second error of the inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The Bonnies rebounded in the bottom of the inning as they cut the deficit in half. Junior catcher Michael Grieco delivered a one-out single, and senior Jamie Wallschlaeger was then hit by a pitch. With runners on first and second, senior center fielder Brad Steinbach (pictured) drove a single through the right side to score Grieco from second for St. Bonaventure's first run of the year.
However, that would be the first and only run of the afternoon for the Bonnies as Sacred Heart then plated two in the 6th, three in the 7th and eight in 8th.
Brennen pitched 5.2 innings of two-hit baseball, but was still saddled with the loss. He struck out six and walked just one as he finished with four runs against, three of which were earned.
St. Bonaventure will return to action on Sunday in a high-Noon affair with Northeastern.
Game Notes: Wallschlaeger relieved Brennen in the 6th, and freshman right-hander Asa Johnson made his collegiate debut in the 8th … Sacred Heart finished with 16 hits and two errors while St. Bonaventure ended with five hits and five errors … the game was the second of the day for the Pioneers as they had lost to Rhode Island previously … the contest was played at Santaluces Athletic & Aquatic Center.
