WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Trying to avenge a Tuesday loss to Western Michigan, the St. Bonaventure baseball team (2-4) dropped an 8-3 decision to the Broncos (5-7) Friday evening.
The night started well for the Bonnies as junior Ryan Skellie, coming off a three-hit game on Thursday, drilled a three-run homer to open the scoring in the 2nd inning. His second home run of the year plated senior center fielder Brad Steinbach and junior left fielder Nick Brennen, both of whom had reached on singles.
The Bona lead was short-lived, however, as Western Michigan responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame off starter Eddie Gray to knot the game at 3-3.
That's the way the score remained until the 7th inning when the Broncos plated five runs, four of which were earned, off reliever Jordan Crane to go on for their 8-3 victory, the second win over the Bonnies in the last four days.
Gray threw six innings and only surrendered three earned runs in a no-decision effort. The southpaw struck out five while walking three and scattering seven hits.
Skellie continued his recent hot streak as he finished 2-for-4, while Steinbach and Brennen both collected two hits on the evening. Freshman Brian Weightman pinch hit in the 9th and grounded out in his first collegiate at bat.
The Bonnies will return to action on Saturday when they face Northeastern at Noon. Both of St. Bonaventure's wins this year have come over the Huskies, and right-hander Cael Johnson will look to make that three as he is expected to get the start on the mound.
