ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The baseball team (14-17, 6-6 Atlantic 10 Conference) is scheduled to take on Little Three rival Canisius (17-20, 6-4 MAAC) in a doubleheader at Fred Handler Park Wednesday. The Bonnies will look to rebound from an earlier-season loss at Canisius. Game one is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., and game two will begin at approximately 4:30.
LAST TIME OUT: The Bonnies are coming off a three-game sweep of A-10 rival Saint Louis this past weekend. In game one of the series, redshirt sophomore Eddie Gray threw seven innings of three-hit, one-run baseball and sophomore Billy Urban tied a career high by collecting four hits.
SCOUTING CANISIUS: The Golden Griffins were swept in a doubleheader against Manhattan last Friday. Since March 29 (14 games), the Canisius bullpen has a 1.94 ERA, covering 41.2 innings. Redshirt sophomore Nathan Linseman has a 1.00 ERA in his last five appearances, allowing one run in seven innings during that timeframe. In his last seven appearances, senior Josh Marshall is 1-0 with a 2.03 ERA in 13.1 innings pitched. He has 21 strikeouts in his last 18.2 innings pitched, including 13 in his last 8.2 innings. Senior Sean Jamieson currently has a nine-game hitting streak (13-for-29, three home runs, 11 RBI).
A-10 ACCOLADES: Eddie Gray and Billy Urban both picked up A-10 honors for their performances against Saint Louis, as Gray won Pitcher of the Week and Urban Player of the Week. Gray started game one of the series against Saint Louis, pitched seven innings and gave up just three hits to earn his team-leading fourth win of the season. Urban hit an impressive .636 and slugged 1.091 in the three games against the Billikens. He finished the series going 7-for-11 and didn't strike out once. Urban's average increased from .272 before the series to .307 after the three-game set, now good for second best on the team.
BATTLE ON THE BUMP:
Game 1 Probables: Nick Brennen (LHP) vs. Alex Tufts (RHP)
Brennen (0-4) will look to pick up his first win of the season against the Griffs. Brennen has a 8.05 ERA and 25 strikeouts in six appearances this season. Left-handed batters are hitting just .111 against him. Tufts (3-0) comes in with a 4.44 ERA in seven appearances. In 24.1 innings he has given up 12 runs, walked 13 and struck out 15.
Game 2 Probables: Robert Nalepa (RHP) vs. Garrett Cortright (RHP)
Nalepa (3-2) enters the game with a 7.66 ERA in 10 appearances this season. He's struck out 13 and walked 14 in 24.2 innings of work. Nalepa has induced 35 fly-ball outs and 24 ground-ball outs in his appearances this year. Cortright (1-3) has an ERA of 7.18 in 31.1 innings. In nine appearances he has given up 37 hits, 26 runs, walked 16 and struck out 13.
300 CLUB: After Urban's monstrous series, the Bonnies now have four players hitting over .300. Brad Steinbach (.348) leads the team, followed by Urban (.307), Austin Ingraham (.303) and Jason Radwan (.300).
