NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team (4-3-1) rallied to tie from a three-goal deficit, but came up short in the comeback effort, falling 4-3 to Canisius at the Big 4 Tournament hosted by Niagara University.
Canisius opened the scoring just 14 seconds in and had a three-goal margin before freshman Molly Curry finished a cross from senior Tori Burchett in the 30th minute. Fellow first-year Alicia Elwell put home another Burchett cross just 4:22 later to pull the Bonnies to within one headed towards halftime.
The Bonnies, who had been unbeaten in their last four, earned a 13-3 shots advantage in the second half and broke through to even the score in the 67th minute when Emily Bucilla netted her first of the year.
Canisius (4-2-1) earned its third straight victory behind Katie Griffin's eventual game-winner in the 77th.
"We did so many things well," said Bona head coach Manoj Khettry. "But we made some fatal mistakes and got punished for them. I was really proud of the character we showed to climb back from 3-0, but we expended so much energy doing it and it's tough to win when you've dug such a deep hole."
SBU returns to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Tournament host Niagara.Â
