Vanino, Reed Key Bona Comeback Victory At Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Sophomore Brad Vanino tied the game in the 41st minute, classmate James Reed scored the game-winner in the 76th minute and the St. Bonaventure men's soccer team (4-5) overcame an early deficit to defeat host Cleveland State (2-5) Wednesday night, 2-1.

Vanino's second goal of the year – and second of his career – came off a Viking turnover. Sophomore Daniel Iannacito found the Sinking Spring, Pa. native who beat starting keeper Toby Frohlich.

The Vikings switched goalkeepers at the half, but it didn't stop the Bonnies from finding the back of the net as Reed continued his stellar 2011 campaign with his conference-leading fifth goal of the season.

Once again it was Iannacito getting credit for the assist, as this time the Richmond Hill, Ontario sent a cross from the right side of the pitch onto the foot of Reed, who this time beat CSU keeper Joe Kalt. Reed's goal continues to pad his A-10 lead in points with 11.

"It was a wonderful victory especially coming off a difficult weekend," head coach Mel Mahler said of the Bonnies snapping a two-game losing streak. "I'm proud of the team and how they bounced back with great determination.

"Dan (Iannacito) played well in assisting on both goals, and once again James (Reed) scored a clutch goal. We were also much better organized defensively."

Cleveland State jumped on the board early as a 7th-minute tally past keeper Bobby Diaz put the Bonnies behind. However, the club was able to overcome the deficit and pick up its second come-from-behind win of the season.

Looking to snap its own two-game skid, the Vikings could muster just four shots against the Bona defense, two of which went on frame.

St. Bonaventure returns to action on Monday, Sept. 26, in a home match against Cornell. The meeting with the Big Red is set for a 3:30 kickoff and will be the club's last home game until Oct. 21 when it battles Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island.

Game Notes: Vanino's other goal this year came against Florida Atlantic in a 2-0 win … this was Diaz's second career start … the Bonnies opened last season with a 1-0 win over Cleveland State … SBU attempted seven shots … three yellow cards were issued: two to SBU and one to CSU … fouls were even at six each … the Vikings out-cornered the Brown and White, 3-2.
