PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team (2-9) came up short in their Atlantic 10 opener, losing to Temple (5-4-1) on the road in overtime, 2-1.
The Bonnies started the scoring early in this one. James Reed received a pass from Emmett O'Connor and scored his first goal of the year to give SBU a 1-0 lead just 2:47 into the game.
No more shots would be fired by either team until the 16th minute when Temple's Jared Martinelli has his offering blocked.Â
From there the physicality picked up. SBU midfielder Brad Vanino picked up the first yellow card of the game followed shortly by Temple's Cody Calfiore and SBU's Brad Beaumont just over ten minutes later. Bonnies midfielder Daniel Iannacito would pick up the third yellow card for SBU in the 39th minute. TU would be forced to play with ten men the rest of game after the Ryan Bradbury red card in the 40th minute. At the same time, Kolby Banker would earn the fourth and final yellow card for SBU in the first half.
At the half the Bonnies trailed 8-4 in the shot column despite leading 1-0. Senior goalkeeper Abel Bautista recorded four saves.
The Temple offense took over in the second half, dominating the shot tally until Ryan Bradbury connected on the Jared Martinelli offering to tie the score in the 65th minute. Â Despite several scoring chances by both teams, the score would remain tied, 1-1 at the end of regulation.
At the end of regulation Temple was leading the shot category 24-13. Abel Bautista was forced to make five saves in the second half while Temple made a goalie change and made six saves.
In overtime, the two teams traded shots for 9:57 but it was the last shot that Temple made count. Cody Calafiore crossed the ball into the box and Jake Lister connected with a header for the game winning goal.
"We played well enough to win" said SBU head coach Mel Mahler. "We created numerous scoring opportunities. By not finishing them Temple was able to hang around. I give them credit for finding a way to win. Now we move forward and focus on Saint Joseph's Sunday."
The Bonnies are back in action in Philadelphia on Sunday (Oct. 7) at Saint Joseph's. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
