ST. BONAVENTURE , N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure men's soccer team (5-13, 3-5) trailed for 85 minutes and just could not find a way to grab that equalizing goal as La Salle (9-6-3, 3-4-1) handed the Bonnies a 1-0 loss that could keep the Brown and White out of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
In just the sixth minute, La Salle's Rob Friskey capitalized on a deflected corner kick that that fell to his feet. He was able to finish the score putting the Explorers up 1-0 for the duration.
The first half was relatively uneventful for the Bonnies. They would only manage to get off four shots while La Salle fired eight. SBU did however hold a corner kick advantage in the first half (4-1).
The second half showed a lot of potential for the Bonnies in spurts. The Brown and White pumped in 15 shots but could not find the goal. Daniel Iannacito had arguably the best chance at tying the score when he took a high ball and sent a bicycle kick towards the La Salle goalkeeper John McCarthy. Unfortunately for Iannacito, McCarthy was able to get a hand on the shot while falling in the opposite direction, keeping the lead intact.
In the late stages of the match, La Salle would be whistled for multiple delay of game penalties that would result in yellow cards. By the end of the game, SBU had outshot the Explorers 19-12. The Bonnies are now 1-6 when they outshoot their opponent.
Emmett O'Connor failed to register any points, keeping his career assist total at 19. Wally Senk's record is safe for now but the Ajax, Ontario native has at least one more game to play this season.
While it is a long shot, the Bonnies still have a chance at the postseason. They will require plenty of help from other schools around the A-10 and of course they will need to win on Sunday. Follow @BonniesMSoccer for updates throughout the night as to the Bonnies postseason chances.Â
The Bonnies will kick off with Fordham on Sunday in their regular season finale and senior day. The game will take place at Olean High School once again and is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
