ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The hot perimeter shooting of Iona (7-6) proved too much for the St. Bonaventure men's basketball team (7-5) to overcome as the Gaels raced to a 93-74 victory on Monday afternoon at the Reilly Center in SBU's final non-conference home game of the season.
Senior Demitrius Conger posted a season-high 26 points – one of tying his career high – and added a game-high-tying eight rebounds for the Bonnies. Bonaventure was dealt its first home loss in six games this season and suffered back-to-back losses for the first time on the year. The loss is also just the second in the last 17 regular-season games at the RC.
Led by the high-scoring guard combo of Sean Armand (27 points, 7-14 3-pointers) and Lamont Jones (23 points, 3-5 3-pointers), Iona connected on 31-of-59 from the field (53 percent), 13-of-27 from 3-point range (48 percent) and 18-of-19 from the foul line (95 percent).
The Gaels came into the game ranked 11th in the nation in scoring offense (81.9), 5th in 3-pointers per game (9.4) and 3rd in free-throw percentage (78.5). Individually, Jones entered as the country's 5th-leading scorer at 22.4 per game.
Iona never trailed after a 21-7 run gave the Gaels a 36-22 lead late in the first half. The Bonnies – who had cut the deficit to nine at the half, 40-31 – scored seven straight points early in the second half to trim the Iona lead to three (45-42), but the Gaels countered with a 17-3 run to pull away.
Coupled with NC State's 92 points in SBU's last game, it marks the first time in the six-year tenure of head coach Mark Schmidt that the Bonnies have allowed 90 or more points in consecutive games. The last time that occurred was during the 2006-07 season as Bona allowed consecutive 100-point games to Duquesne and Temple.
Junior Charlon Kloof – who fouled out after 22 minutes of action – scored seven points and issued a career-high eight assists against just two turnovers. Senior Eric Mosley came off the bench to knock down three 3-pointers en route to his nine points, a total which was equaled by Chris Johnson.
Making his first start since Dec. 1 of last year, Michael Davenport scored five of SBU's first seven points and finished with eight on the day. Sophomore Jordan Gathers – making his first start since the NCAA Tournament game last year – also netted eight as both he and Davenport finished one point shy of tying their season highs in scoring.
After shooting just 31 percent in the first half (11-35), the Bonnies connected at a 46-percent clip in the second half (16-35). However, they allowed Iona – which hit several NBA-range 3-pointers – to shoot a blistering 64 percent (18-28) in the second half, including 63 percent (10-16) from long range.
The 93 points is nearly 40 more than SBU was allowing teams to score in the RC as it came into the game holding its first five opponents to just 57.4 points per game. It also marks the first time an opponent has scored 90 or more points in a regulation game at the RC since Jan. 10, 2009, when Duquesne tallied 98.
For the first time in his career, junior Matthew Wright missed a game as he suffered a foot injury during Bona's shootaround earlier on Monday. The Toronto native, who played in all 31 games as a freshman, all 32 last year and started all 11 this season, entered the game averaging 7.4 points per outing and is the team's leading free-throw shooter at 81 percent.
St. Bonaventure returns to action on Saturday against its third straight 2012 NCAA Tournament team when it visits Colorado State. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. Eastern (2:30 Mountain) from Fort Collins.
GAME NOTES: Johnson did not start for the first time this year due to a coach's decision … Saint Joseph's scored 93 last year in a game at the Reilly Center, but that contest went to double overtime … sophomore Youssou Ndoye had his streak of scoring in double figures snapped at three as he tallied just five points and collected seven rebounds … Marquise Simmons rounded out the Bona scoring with two points and also grabbed five boards … Iona had five players reach double-figure scoring … the 19-point loss is the worst suffered by the Bonnies at home since Feb. 13, 2010, when Richmond claimed a 68-49 victory.
