The St. Bonaventure baseball team split a double header at Dayton today as they began Atlantic 10 Conference play. The Bonnies responded to a 6-3 loss in the first game to beat the Flyers 13-6 in the second game.
The Brown and White began the scoring in the first game in the first inning with a single by senior left fielder Nick Brennen, scoring junior second baseman Jason Radwan. Dayton tied the game in the bottom of the first.
The game remained tied 1-1 until Dayton scored a run in the bottom of the eighth.
In the top of the ninth, St. Bonaventure tied the game on a single to right field by Radwan, scoring senior catcher Michael Grieco. The Bonnies took the lead after Radwan scored following a wild pitch. The Flyers won the game on a walk-off grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Junior third baseman Austin Ingraham went three for four at the plate.
On the mound, redshirt junior lefty Eddie Gray threw seven and two-thirds innings, recording four strikeouts while allowing a walk, one earned run and nine hits. Sophomore right-hander Asa Johnson pitched a third of an inning, allowing one hit. Radwan threw for two-thirds of an inning, allowing a hit, three walks and four earned runs.
In the second game, Dayton scored once in the bottom of the first. The Brown and White took the lead in the top of the second on a single by senior right fielder Ryan Skellie, scoring Ingraham and junior third baseman Billy Urban.
In the top of the third, Brennen singled to center, scoring Radwan.
St. Bonaventure took command of the game in the top of the fourth with five runs. Sophomore first baseman Justin Brozick scored on a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Michael Meredith. Junior outfielder Eric Jutca, Radwan and Grieco scored on a double by Brennen. Urban hit a single to left field, bringing Brennen home.
The Bonnies added three more runs in the fifth. Radwan singled to left, batting in Meredith and Grieco. Brennen hit a single to the right side of the field, scoring Radwan.
In the top of the sixth, Skellie scored on a single by Jutca.
The Bonnies scored their final run of the game in the top of the seventh as Skellie singled to left field, scoring Brennen.
The Flyers scored one run in the bottom of the fifth and the bottom of the seventh and three runs in the bottom of the ninth.
Skellie went four for six at the plate with four hits and three RBI.
Senior right-hander Jordan Crane pitched a complete game, striking out four batters while allowing a walk, four earned runs and 11 hits.
St. Bonaventure, now 9-7 on the season, concludes their series at Dayton tomorrow with first pitched scheduled for 12 p.m.
