ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y.- The St. Bonaventure baseball team (9-9) fell to Canisius (12-13), 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at Fred Handler Park.
Bonnies' starter Asa Johnson (1-1) opened the game by allowing three runs to the Griffs in the first inning. For the next three innings there was no offense until Johnson gave up a solo home run in the fourth.
Seven different Bonnies recorded one hit each. Junior Michael Merideth added two RBI while senior Ryan Skellie added one RBI as well to complete the Bona offense for the day.
Johnson went five innings allowing four runs, all earned, on six hits, picking up his first loss of the season. Cam Carney entered the game for Johnson in the sixth. He went one inning giving up no runs on zero hits. Billy Urban entered the game with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning and struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam.
Canisius starter Rohn Pierce picked up the win (1-1) going 6.2 innings, giving up three runs on six hits. Closer Jon Fitzsimmons earned his sixth save this season.
The Bonnies went scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. Urban led off the inning with a double down the left-field line. He advanced to third when Austin Ingraham grounded out the second base and later scored on a Skellie single. Later in the inning Michael Grieco walked to advance Skellie to second. They both scored on Meredith's double to left field to cut the Canisuis lead to 4-3.
Unfortentely for the Bonnies, that is as close as they would get, falling 4-3.
The Bonnies return to the field this weekend when they take A-10 foe Fordham Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Fred Handler Park.
